Both the Solanco boys and girls lost to Elizabethtown in the first track meet of the season. "It has been a short cold two and half weeks for practice," coach Ivan Haines said. "It was difficult trying to practice in the weather. Our number of athletes is up this year for both teams which is great providing us with many inexperienced athletes. With only two senior girls and eight guys we will be depending on our underclassmen." The boys lost 98-51.
"The boys fell short today for several reasons," Haines said. "We matched up well against their team, but they were just a little bit better in events we thought we would do well in. Plus our inexperience came into play." Solanco recorded three first place finishes, junior Noah Brady in the 3200 m, Mike McFadden in the 110 hurdles, and senior Hunter Johnson in the pole vault by jumping 13 feet. "Again it was good to see many of the returning athletes starting where they ended last year," said Haines. "With only having eight seniors this year we again will be depending on underclassmen who performed well for us last night, picking up the second and third places. If we are to have a successful year we will need to pick up these second and thirds." Underclassmen to watch will be Noah Brady, Liam Hodgson , Prosper Eguzouwa, Troy Berry, Alec and Kyle Munro. The Solanco girls suffered an 88-57 setback. "Although The girls' team numbers are up, it is composed of over half freshmen and is very inexperienced," Haines said. "We will be relying on these underclassmen a lot this year and are looking to the future for these girls." The throwers scored 18 points against Elizabethtown. "It has been a long time since the girl throwers lead the team," the coach said. Junior Emily Conklin (javelin) and freshman Ashley Mundorff (discus) each notched a win. They were backed by Kayla Robinson earning a second in the javelin. "We are looking forward to what these girls will be doing this year," said Haines. Freshman Jenevieve Eberly had an auspicious debut with victories in the 100 meters hurdles, long jump and 4 X 400 m relay with Abby Yoder, Jess Lapp, and Carly Allport. Junior Natalie Crum also picked up double wins in the 4 X 800 m relay with Morgan Perry, Essi Glah-Fisher, and Allport and the open 800 meters. Brooke McCardell was able to earn a win in the pole vault jumping 10-feet, three inches. "What was a big surprise to see was the girls put up a great battle with most starting out close to where they left off at the end of last season," Haines said. "I am looking forward to this being a very successful year for this young team." Comments are closed.
