by Bud Hart Solanco’s young and inexperienced tennis team suffered three losses this past week, a 7-0 defeat to Cedar Crest at home, a 5-2 loss to Garden Spot at New Holland, and a 7-0 defeat at Pequea Valley. On Monday, August 28, in singles action Cedar Crest’s number one player, Clare Aitken, defeated the Golden Mules Keirth Paine 6-1, 6-2. At number two, Serena Cheng downed Gabby Griffonetti 6-0, 6-1; Hallie Koslowski subdued freshman Faith Redcay at number three, 6-0, 6-1, and Olivia Hitz overcame Elsie Zaborskiy 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Cedar Crest’s Aiken and Cheng defeated Solanco’s Paine and Griffonetti 8-0 at number one. Hitz and Miller downed Redcay and Zaborskiy 8-4 at number two, and Koslowski and Mary Moyer defeated Hannah Steinhauer and Kelsey Sheets 8-0 at number four Solanco’s number four, Zaborskiy, a junior, earned the only singles win at Garden Spot on Wednesday, August 30, a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, (12-10) tie breaker over Spartan junior Ashley Risser. Zaborskiy teamed with Griffonetti in doubles to win the only doubles match for the Mules, a close 9-7 advantage over Katlyn Varley and Lillie Risser, both juniors. Garden Spot’s number one singles player Elle Hallquist, a sophomore, defeated Paine, 6-1, 6-2. Paige Kemper downed Griffonetti, 6-0, 6-2 at number two, and Paula Groff, a senior, defeated Redcay, 6-3, 6-0. In doubles play Hallquist and Kemper defeated Paine and Redcay, 8-1, and Groff and Risser edged Steinhauer and Sheets, 8-3. “The match, unfortunately, highlighted our inexperience,” wrote Coach Brown. “Our team was able to play with their girls, but Garden Spot players had more control placing their shots.” Coach Brown added that the girls’ movement on the court and communication has improved and he is looking forward to continued improvement. At Pequea Valley on Friday, September 1, the Braves swept the Mules in both singles and doubles. In singles play, Sophia Weaver downed Paine 6-0, 6-2, Natalie Stoltzfus defeated Griffonetti, 6-3, 6-1, Naomi Feister topped Faith Redcay, 6-1, 6-0 and Ryleigh Kurtz stopped Zaborskiy, 6-2, 6-0. Doubles proved more of the same as Weaver and Stoltzfus teamed to down Paine and Redcay, 8-1. Feister and Kurtz defeated Griffonetti and Zaborskiy by an 8-2 advantage and Kristen Huenick and Hope Fisher stopped Steinhauer and Sheets, 8-0. Comments are closed.
