The Solanco softball team is saying goodbye to nine seniors who helped the squad to a 16-6 record and fourth place finish in the district. "This group has had a lot of wins," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. "They have done a lot for the program. Some of them were three-year starters and have helped advance the program." Kortnee Kreider, Kerri Mauger, Emily Parmer, Brittany Fisher, Sam Graver, Emma Kreider, Morgan Hodson, Danae Dombach, and Kate Herr are graduating Wednesday night. "They've been playing together for many years and it showed," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. "Some were leaders. Others were role players. But they all contributed and that's what you need to have to have a year like we had." The Mules must replace its starting batter in the ace pitcher Kreider and the all-league catcher Parmer. Kreider compiled an ERA of 2.02 in 128 innings of work. She struck out 97 and yielded 108 hits and 31 walks. "Kortnee worked hard, elevated her speed, and was mentally tough," Miller said. "She had a big impact."
In addition to Kreider and Parmer, the Mules must replace starters at third base (Fisher), right field (Mauger) and centerfield (Graver). "We have a lot of good players to replace," said Miller. "We did it two years ago. It's the next one's turn. There are some heir apparents for positions but everybody has to earn it. You have to keep working over the summer and winter and the ones who work the hardest are going to prevail … As a coach you're going to react to the players working the hardest. You encourage them and motivate them." RELATED: Photos and stories from throughout the 2014 season. Solanco is expected to return four starters – second baseman Madi Sheaffer, the All-League shortstop Maribeth Ault, first baseman Sydney Sturgill, and left field Abby Heidelbaugh. Sheaffer hit .302 and drove in 11 runs. Ault batted a team-best .493 with 21 RBIs. Sturgill only came to the plate six times this season but is expected to bat next year. Heidelbaugh hit .286 and excelled in the postseason. Solanco scored 177 runs and had 142 RBIs compared to 102 last year. "That means more people were getting into scoring position and people were having productive at bats. That was a point of emphasis for us heading into the season." The Mules have won 14 of the last 25 Section Two titles. "Except for the blip of a year where Conestoga Valley won the section (2012), it's been Elizabethtown and us, predominantly us. That's what's expected." ALL-STARS: Solanco had five players selected to the Section Two All-Star team. Kortnee Kreider, Brittany Fisher, Emily Parmer, Kerri Mauger, and Maribeth Ault were chosen as the top 18 players in the section. Parmer and Ault earned All-League honors for Sections One and Two where the top player at each position is honored. SOLANCO STAT LEADERS (minimum 50 plate appearances): Batting average: 1.
