The Solanco JV boys basketball team lost twice after recording an overtime victory. Cocalico downed the Mules 46-28 Friday. Taylor Dombach provided eight points to pace Solanco. Ethan Cairns contributed five. Troy Berry and Keith Carnrike each added four and Colin Kilgore notched three.
Solanco led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter before Cocalico used some hot shooting to grab a 19-11 halftime advantage. "Their hot shooting continued in the second half and we never recovered," coach Chad McDowell said. "I thought we played decent defense but they made their shots. On the other hand, we had many good looks on the offensive end, but we struggled to get out shots to fall. It was just one of those rough shooting nights. I know we will bounce back." Conestoga Valley topped Solanco 57-52 last Wednesday. Berry poured in 16 points and Dombach had 13. Cody Bleacher recorded five and Kilgore and Neil Munro both had four. Noah McCardell registered three points. "After a very competitive first half (where Solanco led by two), the second half was full of runs," McDowell said. "CV made the first run. They took advantage of a big third quarter to pull out to a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter run belonged to us. With increased defensive pressure, we were able to get back into the game and tied it at 51 with under a minute to play. After a CV basket, we were forced to foul and CV made four consecutive free throws to secure the victory. I thought we put forth a great effort in the fourth quarter. The determination and team effort was tremendous. Unfortunately we had to expend a lot of energy getting back into the game and the tank was empty at the end. I am very proud of the never-give-up attitude displayed by everyone." Solanco upended Elizabethtown 57-53 in overtime Monday, January 6. Berry had a team-high 15 points and Bleacher supplied 10. Munro and Cairns each recorded seven points. McCardell managed five and Dombach provided four. "This was a game that went back and forth for four quarters and overtime," said McDowell. Neither team led by more than five points. Bleacher hit a free throw with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The Mules kept earning trips to the charity stripe in the extra session. "We were able to get to the foul line 12 times and I felt that was the difference in the game," said McDowell. "I thought we executed when we needed to, made big shots at key times in the game, and did what was needed to get the win. Whenever we play Elizabethtown it is going to be a physical, intense game and we did a nice job of playing with composure and heart. It was a good team win against a scrappy opponent."
