The Solanco JV boys basketball team bounced back from two league losses to knock off non-conference foe Avon Grove 58-23 Saturday night. Ethan Cairns contributed a team-high 12 points for the Mules. Ken Walton and Keith Carnrike each added nine. Taylor Dombach recorded eight points and Matt Gote notched four. Colin Kilgore and Curtis Herr each had three points. Twelve different Mules scored as Cole Boxleitner, Kenton Frank, Cody Bleacher, Robbie McHugh, and Dawson Gote each scored two points.
Leading 25-18 at halftime, Solanco outscored Avon Grove 33-5 in the second half and did not allow a point in the fourth quarter. "We used a big defensive second half," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "We made a few halftime adjustments to our defense and we were able to force Avon Grove to turn the ball over. Our defense really sparked our offense. I thought we did a nice job playing together as a team and trusting one another on the defensive end. This was a complete team effort from beginning to end. I am proud of the way the team bounced back after losing two tough games earlier in the week." Manheim Township downed the Mules 57-40 Friday night. Matt Gote led Solanco with nine points and Troy Berry supplied seven. McHugh and Robbie McCardell each scored five points and Carnrike added four. Township led 38-36 at the end of the third quarter before breaking the game open. "After a competitive first three quarters, Township used an explosive fourth quarter to earn the victory," said McDowell. "The final score is no indication of how close the game really was for three quarters. In the fourth quarter we struggled to score and Township got some easy transition points off our turnovers. We did not take care of the ball very well in the fourth quarter and that hurt us. I thought we played well enough to win the game for three quarters. We need to be able to compete for all four quarters and be able to withstand runs by our opponents. “We will definitely learn from this experience and be a better team." Ephrata topped the Mules 68-51 last Thursday night. Matt Gote and Herr each had 11 points. Berry and Carnrike had five points apiece. Dombach and Walton both scored four points and Cairns chipped in three. "Ephrata took charge of the game on the offensive end of the court," said McDowell. "They just had one of those nights where it seemed like all of their shots found the bottom of the basket. We tried multiple different defenses and nothing could slow them down. “Every time we made a run at them, they countered and pushed their lead back up to double figures. Our effort was there, but we just ran into a hot shooting team." Comments are closed.
