The Solanco JV baseball team won two of three games last week. Penn Manor defeated the Mules 12-3. "It wasn’t the Mules day as pitchers and fielders struggled," coach John Girvin said. In fact, the time limit on the game (1 hour and 45 minutes) forced the game to end after five innings. Derrick Lavin, Phil Probst, Colin Ewaka, Dawson Gote and Mike Worthington all pitched. Only Worthington held the Comets scoreless as Penn Manor plated three in the first, four in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth. Mule hurlers gave up 10 walks and 7 hits and a host of wild pitches. The Solanco defense did not help the cause committing 6 miscues. On the positive, Dawson Gote continued to be a hot hitter with a double and a single.
On Thursday, Solanco went to Lebanon to play another "home" game and the Mules prevailed 8-4. Another freshman, Phil Quinn, got the start for the Mules. His teammates got him three runs in the bottom of the first as Worthington and Robert Beard walked. Probst doubled to drive in two runs and scored on a sacrifice fly from Derrick Lavin. With the score 3-2 in the third, the Mules plated four runs as they batted around when Beard reached on an error, Probst walked, Lavin and Tony Osborne followed with RBI singles. Josh Kreider walked and later Worthington and Jarett McGuire walked giving Solanco a 7-1 lead. Meanwhile, Quinn yielded only four hits and one earned run through five innings and left with a 7-2 lead. Lavin and Beard finished on the mound and contributed to the Mules final run as Beard singled and was driven in by Lavin. Solanco upended Cocalico 11-5. Ewaka got the start for Solanco. Beard singled, stole second, and scored on a throwing error to give the Mules a 1-0 lead in the first. With the score tied, Solanco plated two runs in the second as Dawson Gote got the first of his four hits, Osborne also singled and following a wild pitch, Noah McCardell drove in two runs with a single. In the third, Beard and Matt Gote singled followed by RBI singles by Lavin, Dawson Gote and Ewaka, giving the Mules a 6-1 lead. Cocalico scored two runs on four hits in the third to make it 6-3. McCardell singled and came around to score making it 7-3. Worthington came in to pitch a scoreless fourth but yielded two runs in the fifth making the score 7-5. Solanco got five insurance runs in the sixth as Osborne walked and scored on a McGuire single, Worthington walked. Beard hit a sacrifice fly, Matt Gote drove in a run on a grounder and Lavin and Gote singled in runs. Beard closed out the game on the mound. The Mules are 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the league.
