The Solanco girls cross country team finished second in the Lancaster-Lebanon League meet. Hempfield placed all five of their runners in the Top 26 to take the title. "Our girls responded well to the challenge," coach Craig Ausel said. Sophomore Cortney Johnson finished second overall with an impressive time of 19:49. "Cortney ran a very smart race moving from fifth to second place in the last mile," said Ausel. "Cortney passed the number one Hempfield girl in the last 50 meters."
Morgan Perry finished 15th in 20:25 and Natalie Crum was 17th in 20:25. "Morgan and Natalie worked well together throughout the whole race battling all of the Hempfield and Ephrata girls around them," Ausel said. Essi Glah-Fisher raced hard finishing in 30th in 21:01. "Essi did not have her best day but her effort allowed us to hold off Ephrata and Manhiem Township," the coach said. Kaitlyn Borcky rounded out the scoring for Solanco. "We can’t say enough about Kaitlyn’s progress this season," said Ausel. "She has dropped six minutes off of her 5K time. Her 40th place finish was so outstanding. We knew if Kaitlyn ran in the low 40s she could beat most of the school’s fifth runners. She beat 20 of the 21 school's fifth runners and 19 of all school’s fourth runners. All five ladies played a gigantic part in our team’s success…We look forward to the district 3 meet next week in our attempt to qualify as many ladies as we can for the PIAA state competition the following week." The Solanco boys finished eighth in the 21-team field. "We did not lose to anyone that we had not lost to during the regular season," said Ausel. Two Mules medaled. Kyle Munro was 13th in 17:18. "Kyle is running strong right now and did what he needed to do to remain strong in the final mile to secure this solid finish," Ausel said. Noah Brady was 16th in 17:23. "Noah went out well, struggled in the middle, but fought hard in the final mile to secure a 16th place finish," said the coach. "I’m sure Noah will bounce back next week at the PIAA District 3 meet.” Junior Liam Hodgson, who has been struggling to fight a respiratory infection for the past three weeks, finished 39th in 18:01. "Liam ran very well for the first two miles but was unable to hold pace with his teammates," said Ausel. "At this point, we just want to see Liam feeling better." Junior Keith Carnrike ran a solid 19:14 to finish 89th for the Mules. "Keith has been a steady scorer at our fourth and fifth man position this season," said Ausel. Comments are closed.
