The Solanco girls finished eighth and the boys placed 13th at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet in Ephrata Tuesday, October 20. Cortney Johnson led the girls squad by earning a medal for the second straight season. "This was one of the very strongest and deep fields we have ever seen with 13 girls running under 20 minutes," said coach Craig Ausel. Johnson was seventh in a time of 19:40, nine seconds faster than her second place finish of one year ago. "We knew she had been getting stronger and stronger and was ready to peak for postseason competition," said Ausel.
Junior Morgan Perry ran a strong race, just missing a medal with a 28th place finish. She has placed in the Top 30 in her first three seasons. Senior Essi Glah-Fisher ran her last L-L meet finishing in 38th position at 21:17. "Essi and Morgan have scored big points for us this season, helping us to be very competitive against some very good teams." Ausel said a big reason for the great day was not only the girls who placed in the top 40 but also strong finishes by Aubree Roop (68th in 22:34) and Christen Esposito (88th in 23:37). Roop dropped one minute off the previous week's race and Esposito dropped one minute and 30 seconds over the same period of time. "Their strong effort allowed us to finish the season very strong," Ausel said. Rounding out the days runners for the Solanco girls were Hannah Wheeler, 25:47, Casey Weder, 26:31, and Denise Brenneman 26:09. "These three ladies have worked very hard to make our championship season squad," said Ausel. In the boys race, Liam Hodgson broke the 17-minute barrier, running 16:58 and finishing 16th. That put Hodgson third all-time among Solanco times recorded for the L-L championship course behind John Ausel’s 16:38 and 16:43. "Liam ran strong today," Craig Ausel said. "His leadership has been an outstanding example to our young squad." Senior Keith Carnrike ran the best race of his career, finishing in 69th place in 18:12 in a race that saw 52 runners break the 17-minute barrier. "It’s great when seniors can finish the season so strong," said Ausel. "Although Keith has only been on the varsity squad for two years, he has made a big impact on our program." Freshman Ben Stickler and sophomore Patrick Workman were the next two finishers for the Mules. "These two guys worked together and challeged each other throughout the whole race to record strong finishes," said Ausel. Stickler ran 18:27 to finish in 82nd place and recorded the fourth fastest time by a freshman on the L-L course since 2008. Workman’s 86th place finish in 18:32 allowed him to place among the top 30 all-time Solanco times for the L-L course. Rounding out strong efforts for the Mules was Alec Munro at 109th, 18:58, Ian Brown 120th, 19:06, Connor Neaves 134th, 19:43 and Christian Stead 144th, 20:35. "The boys ran strong today with some very good performances," said Ausel. Comments are closed.
