New players. New coach. Same expectations. The Solanco girls basketball team fully expects to contend for the Section Two title despite some major changes. "We don't have many players with a lot of varsity experience," first-year coach Janelle Garber said. "With a lot of young girls and a new coach we're still getting used to each other. It's taking some time to get adjusted but it's going well. The biggest thing is to keep working hard every day." Center Gillian Glackin, the last of the core players who led the Mules to the state tournament, graduated last spring. Senior Jocelyn Mendez, who saw some action on that state tourney team, will be the Mules' main ballhandler.
"She's done a fabulous job in practice and I'm pleased with her court presence and how much she's grown as a player since last season," said Garber, who coached Elizabethtown the last two years before taking over for Tim Glackin. Junior guard Carly Allport has some varsity experience and is also capable of handling the ball. "I'm impressed with her court control," Garber said. The coach said junior guard Haley Conklin is a "very aggressive, savvy player. She knows how to get the ball and how to put the ball in the basket," Garber said. Senior Emily Parmer is a strong defender and communicates well, said the coach. Guard Rachel Trout is also expected to contribute. Senior post player Kerri Mauger got varsity experience last year. "She is very aggressive, runs the floor well, and is a good rebounder," Garber said. Megan Yannutz will be a good presence in the post. Senior Jana Siegrist, who is capable of playing guard or forward, is a valuable role player for Solanco. "I think we'll be competitive in the section," Garber said. "I think it's going to be wide open. Any team can do anything. The girls have the passion and the drive and are working hard. I definitely think we can be contenders. "I'm excited to see how it pans out." Comments are closed.
