Solanco's girls basketball team (3-10) split a pair of games last week. The Mules lost 53-31 to host Ephrata Friday night. Solanco was up 5-2 before Ephrata ended the first half on a 21-2 run. "They have two solid players and they did some damage to us," Mules coach Chad McDowell said. "The second quarter was our downfall. [Ephrata] started playing well at the end of the first quarter and carried it over into the second quarter. We missed some shots and their defensive pressure was intense." McDowell said Solanco performed better in the second half. "We made some halftime adjustments and played pretty well," he said. "It was one of those games where Ephrata did things a little bit better than we did. We're still learning and that's the difference between an experienced team and my young team. It was our first time playing against an aggressive man-to-man defense. It was a learning experience." Gabby Rossi recorded nine points and added two rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Aleksa Burger collected nine points and four boards. Jen Eberly added six points and a team-high seven rebounds. Nikki Boultinghouse supplied four points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Grace Kreider had three points, four assists, two rebounds, and two steals. On Tuesday, January 5, Solanco used a big fourth quarter to subdue visiting Garden Spot 58-42. "It was a competitive game throughout," said McDowell. "They had some shooters we needed to contain and we did. They have some good three-point shooters and our focus was on limiting them. They only made one three-pointer. We played really good defense." The Mules outscored Garden Spot 19-5 in the fourth quarter. "Our execution on offense was good," said McDowell. "We had some decent dribble penetration and we were able to get to the basket. We played some fullcourt man-to-man and got some steals." Solanco had six steals in the final eight minutes. "We played very well in the fourth quarter," said McDowell. "It was a complete game, a good team effort from beginning to end. Everyone contributed. When I needed something to be done someone stepped up and did it." Boultinghouse registered 10 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 rebounds, and two steals. "Nikki had a real good game," said McDowell. "She pretty much did what she wanted to do in the post." Jess Cabrera collected 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Rossi had eight points, five assists, and two rebounds. Burger notched seven points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Kreider posted six points, five steals, and three rebounds. Eberly provided four points and four rebounds and Liz Mowrer chipped in two points and four rebounds. Comments are closed.
