by Bud Hart The Mules played well at Donegal on Monday, May 1, but lost despite a great showing by sophomore Corey Stively. He got the start, surrendering two hits and striking out three. “It was his first start on the mound,” said head coach Tom Fish. “And he was fantastic.” The Mules out-hit the Indians, 5-2, but an unearned run in the fourth inning was all Donegal needed. Solanco committed only one error, but it was costly.
Donegal’s Dawson Magar shut out the Mules with a 1-0 win. John Murray and Dawson Kreider pounded out two hits and Josh Kreider reached base three times, but to no avail. “We were unable to push any runs across on this day,” said Fish. “Corey really settled down after working out of a first inning jam.” On Tuesday, May 2, the Mules faced the Wilson Bulldogs and their luck didn’t change. Solanco was leading 2-0 going into the sixth when Wilson scored a single run in the top half of the inning. With two outs and two strikes on the Bulldog batter, the Bulldog leadoff man doubled in the tying run in the seventh. Solanco had their chance in their half of the inning. Trent Myers was hit by a pitch and both Sam Buckwalter and Jack Boomsma laid down bunt singles to load the bases with nobody out. “But we were unable to push across the winning run,” said the coach. Wilson scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to win 4-2. Josh Kreider got the nod on the mound and did a good job. “He was very strong keeping the Wilson hitters off balance and off base,” added Fish. “It was his strongest outing of the season.” Tim Fetterman continued to swing a hot bat knocking in one of the two Mule runs; Joel McGuire knocked in the other. Both Dawson Kreider and Mike Worthington scored for Solanco. Section leader Elizabethtown visited the Mules on Wednesday, May 3, and earned a 6-2 win to seal the Section title. Sophomore Haydn Fox got the start following his great performance under the lights at L-S. On this cold, extremely windy day, he battled through four tough innings. Both Gabe Horn and Dawson Kreider relieved. Out hitting Solanco 10-5, the Bears took a 3-2 lead in the third inning and held on for the victory. Solanco took the early lead on John Murray’s two-out RBI single. The home team made it 2-0 on a rare E-town error. “We had opportunities all game long,” said Fish. “It seemed as if we had two baserunners on each inning. We just were unable to get that clutch hit that would have kept us in the game.” Colin Ewaka lined one to left for a double, but was left stranded on one of those occasions. Had it not been for outfielders Nate Shambaugh and McGuire, who both made ESPN highlight catches, robbing E-Town hitters of extra bases, the score could have been much greater. Worthington, the Mule shortstop, also made two outstanding towering fly ball catches in short left field in the first inning to end a Bear scoring threat. It was a tough week for the Mules losing three games that could have gone their way. This week wraps up league play, and the Mules will have to wait for next year to make the league playoffs.
