The Solanco softball team was one out away from a win over rival Elizabethtown and a five-game winning streak. The Bears scored runs in the bottom of the seventh on a hard-hit ball that caromed off a Mule infielder and prevailed 7-6 in a battle of Section Two powerhouses. "We have a developing team," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. "We have some veterans and some younger players and they're learning together. This was a good learning experience."
Down 5-2, Elizabethtown tied it with three runs in the fourth before the Mules went ahead 6-5 in the sixth. "It was a game where if we focus on giving the other team three outs an inning that's going to give us an opportunity to be successful," said Miller. "There were times when we allowed more than three outs." Liz Mower collected three hits for the Mules and Bekah Borcky and Cait Armstrong each recorded two hits and scored twice. Miller says his squad will ultimately benefit from the gut-wrenching loss. "It's something to help build the program and learn from if you use it in a positive way," he said. "That's what we're going to do." Solanco (4-2, 2-1 league) started the week with wins over Conestoga Valley and Ephrata, "Those two games were difficult with the weather conditions," Miller said. "It was very cold and it's not easy to pitch in those conditions. Both Hanna Phillips and Kalyn Burger] pitched well enough to get the win." The Mules downed Conestoga Valley 8-2 last Wednesday. Trailing 2-0, Solanco scored once in the third and then took command with six in the fourth. Ally McDowell led off the third with a hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Abby Heidelbaugh, and scored on a hit from Bekah Borcky. In the fourth, the Mules took advantage of five walks. Two runs scored when the CV left fielder dropped a fly ball off the bat of Borcky. Mowrer added a two-run single. Solanco added an insurance run in the sixth. Armstrong doubled to left and scored on a Randi Rambo hit. Armstrong, Rambo, and McDowell each finished with two hits. "We made enough adjustments to their pitchers and got the result we were looking for," said Miller. Phillips collected 12 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run. She yielded five hits and two walks. Solanco routed Ephrata 16-3 in five innings Monday, April 4. The game was tied 1-1 before the Mules scored a run in the third and added eight more in the fourth. "It took us a while to warm up and get going and then it kind of steamrolled," Miller said. Brianna Firlein was 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs. Borcky supplied two hits including a triple and three RBIs. Kate Sheaffer had two hits and drew two walks, drove in a run, and scored three times. McDowell hit a triple and knocked in three runs. Rambo registered a hit and two RBIs. Heidelbaugh had a hit, walked, was hit by a pitch twice, and scored three runs. Armstrong contributed a triple. Burger worked four innings and gave up six hits and two walks while fanning five. Phillips hurled a perfect inning with a strikeout. Comments are closed.
