by Bud Hart Solanco’s varsity softball team remains undefeated. On Friday, April 13, the Mules scored a run in the top of the 10th to defeat Penn Manor, 1-0. The Comets entered the game undefeated and sitting on top of Section I. Both teams were held scoreless by Penn Manor’s Brittany Hook (10 K’s, 1 W) and Solanco’s Hanna Phillips (5 K’s, 0 W) for nine innings. Then Solanco scored the game's sole run in the top of the 10th.
Hook surrendered one run on one hit; Phillips threw a shutout giving up four hits. The Mules beat one of the best pitchers in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Sierra Dean made her debut inside the circle on Thursday, April 12, and made it count with a three-inning, no-hit, shutout over Lebanon at home. The Mules scored four runs in the first, seven in the second and five in the third to send the Cedars home with a 16-0 loss. “With several walks, errors, and timely hits, we did what we needed to do, shorten the game with a win,” said head coach Brett Miller.” We were able to give some players some innings in different positions and they all responded very well.” Miller added that it was a good win, and important for the team, and for Dean, who recorded the pitching victory. “Having not thrown for several days, she settled down and did the job we needed,” noted Miller. In a close one, Solanco outhit Conestoga Valley five to one, but escaped the Buckskin diamond with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday, April 11. Solanco was down 1-0 entering the fifth. Allyssa Henretty reached base on an infield hit, and reached second on a Ally McDowell sacrifice bunt. Henretty scored when the Buckskin outfielder mishandled Kara McClune’s fly ball. In the sixth Mowrer led off with a single. Jade Eshelman walked and eventually scored on a Phillips sac fly. “You must have the ability to find ways to win,” said Miller. “We had only a few opportunities, but made them count. Today was about the team winning, getting a win, not necessarily how we got it.” Phillips limited the Buckskins to one hit, surrendered three walks, while striking out 12. “It’s a team game, that requires on any given day individuals to step up, Hanna stepped up both on the mound and plate,” noted Miller. “We looked to refocus and prepare for the remaining two games.” On Tuesday, April 10, the Mules hosted Garden Spot with a five-inning game that featured a six-run fourth. In the second inning with one out, Dean reached base on an error. Skyla Townsley singled and Phillips helped her own cause with a two-run double. With Desiree DeHaven running for Mowrer, the courtesy runner scored on a McDowell RBI single. Randi Rambo led off the third inning and was hit by a pitch. Mowrer singled and Townsley drove one deep for a three-run home run. Henretty led off the fourth with an infield hit, McDowell singled and McClune hit a bases clearing three-run dinger. Rambo singled and Mowrer went deep for a two-run blast. Dean singled, Phillips singled and Henretty singled to load them up. Dean scored on a passed ball. Garden Spot had one more chance in the top of the fifth with the score 12-2 Mules, but Phillips shut them out the rest of the way. Phillips gave up five hits, two runs, walked one and struck out nine. “We took advantage several times with runners in scoring position and getting some timely big hits from Townsley, McClune, and Mowrer,” added Miller. “Hanna recorded the victory with a solid performance. She has been improving her pitch location and becoming more consistent with the command of her pitches.” On Monday, April 9, the Mules erupted for 10 runs in the second inning to hand Ephrata a five-inning 14-0 loss. The offensive stars were McDowell who blasted a triple and home run knocking in three runs, and Liz Mowrer who went two-for-four with a round tripper and four ribbies. Phillips went the distance inside the circle giving up two hits, two walks, while striking out nine. “Snowing, wet, cold, and wind was not softball weather,” Miller said. “But we generated the result needed for the start of our five game week.” Comments are closed.
