Solanco's track and field teams swept visiting Elizabethtown last Wednesday. Jen Eberly won three individual events to help spark the girls to an 82-68 triumph. Eberly captured the 100 hurdles (18.0), 300 hurdles (51.2), and long jump (16-5, district qualifier). "After losing [the previous week], the girls’ team came ready to compete," coach Ivan Haines said. "Morgan Perry proved this by running a hard fought 800 meters to win at the line."
For the second straight meet, the Mules dominated the throwing competitions, winning all three events and earning 24 out of a possible 27 points. Ashley Mundorff won the shot put (31-4.5), Cameron Trimble prevailed in the discus (96-8), and Cayla Robinson recorded a victory in the javelin (101-5). "We are looking forward to what these girls will be doing this year," said Haines. "What was nice to see was that the scoring was earned by a number of girls." Kelly Cook prevailed in the high jump (4-2) and Christen Esposito won the 400 meters (1:06). "Many young girls stepped up to earn their first win of the season and, for some, their career win to help the team win," Haines said. "We are looking forward to a very successful year for this team." Solanco's boys romped over Elizabethtown, 113-37. Seniors Billy Cooney and Troy Miller once again paced the Mules. Cooney captured the 110 hurdles (15.4) and 300 hurdles (40.6) and was part of the victorious 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams. Miller won the 200 (24.5), long jump (21-10), and high jump (6-2). "Given the right conditions, both of these seniors’ performances could improve," Haines said. Senior Liam Hodgson swept the distance races, winning the 1600 in 4:55 and the 3200 in 10:30. Haines said Alec Munro had a great race in the 800 meters running his best time for the season (2:08). The coach added Dennis Mitchem continues to improve in the 400 meters (55.4) and "ran a very gutsy race" to help win the 4 x 400 relay. "Two bright spots were the throwers and the sprinters," said Haines. "The sprinters were able to earn 39 points out of 45 points with a big sweep in the 200 meters. The throwers continue to improve every meet." Gary Doubts threw a career best 42.75 to win the shot put and Noah McCardell overcame an injury to earn a first in the javelin (141-9.5). "What is really nice to see is that both areas were backed up by some talented underclassmen who were able to pick up seconds and thirds," Haines said. "Again, the boys’ team continue to improve and have not reached their potential." Prosper Eguzouwa (100), Robbie McHugh (triple jump), and Ryan Yaletchko (pole vault) each earned a win.
