Solanco's track and field teams had meets with Cocalico and Lebanon last week. The Mules' boys team defeated Cocalico 76-70 while the Solanco girls lost 81-69. "The boys’ team pulled out a nice and a surprise win," coach Ivan Haines said. "For the first time we were able to win a relay." The distance group paced Solanco. Junior Noah Brady won the 800 and 1600 and teamed with Kyle Munro, Liam Hodgson, and Alec Munro to take the 3200 meter relay. Hodgson won the 3200 meter run.
William Cooney continues to improve in the hurdles, Haines said. He again earned double wins in the 110 and 300s, earning a personal best in the 300 of 43.6. Sophomore Troy Berry earned a first in the high jump, jumping 6’ 2” and senior Toby Kreider earned a first in the triple jump, jumping his personal best of 42’ 11”. The coach said "a very nice surprise" was having Ryan Yaletchko triumphing in the 400 meters. "The girls performed very well," Haines said. "Both teams were equally matched and the girls team was not able pull out a win." The distance group led the team earning 22 points. Junior captain Natalie Crum earned three firsts, capturing the 800 and 1600 and 4 X 800 relay with Carly Allport, Essi Glah-Fisher and Abby Yoder. Jen Eberly (300 hurdles), Morgan Perry (3200 m), Ashley Mundorff (shot put), and Cameron Trimble (discus) each won an individual event. Solanco's underclassmen had a strong showing. "This group of freshmen is really doing well for the team and given more time and experience, they will become very successful," Haines said. "It is really nice to see these underclassmen earning first and stepping forward to lead the team." Emily Conkin threw 113’ 11" to finish second in the javelin. "Other bright spots include Essi Glah-Fisher earning seconds in the distance events and Emily Duvall, who earned her first team points in the pole vault," Haines said. "We still have to make improvements in both teams if we are to meet our goals," said the coach. "We will be making changes in our lineup by moving athletes and taking athletes out of events to help improve our teams." The Solanco boys tied Lebanon 75-75 while the girls pulled out a 103-37 victory. The distance runners dominated the meet picking up 23 out of 27 points. Brady (1600), Munro (800) and Liam Hodgson (3200). Berry and Cooney were able to pick up the only double wins. Cooney dominated the hurdles, running a district qualifying time of 15.2 in the 110 HH. Berry earned a first in the high jump jumping a PR of 6’2”and in the long jump. Kreider (triple jump) and Hunter Johnson (pole vault) each notched a win. "Once again this shows how this team is depending on underclassmen," said Haines. "This team continues to work hard and improve. I feel that the boys team have the talent to develop into a successful team, but we must continue to work and perform a lot harder if we are to reach our goal." The Solanco girls earned first place finishes in all but five events. "What was really nice to see was that the firsts were earned by underclassmen," said Haines. "The team was led by a group of junior girls." Crum captured the 800, 1600, and 4 x 800 relay. Conklin (javelin) and Brooke McCardell (triple jump) each scored a victory. Yoder earned a first in the 400 meters. "Not to be out done by the juniors was a group of freshmen girls," Haines said. Freshman Jen Eberly picked up three wins in both hurdles and the long jump obtaining a personal best in all three. Mundorff earned another first in the shot put and Cortney Johnson earned a first in the 3200 meters. "The distance team also came through earning 26 points of 27. Very impressive to see was all the seconds that were earned by the girls. The girls team is coming together very nicely. These young girls are working hard and will prove to be a team that may surprise others." Comments are closed.
