Solanco's softball team notched a pair of wins last week. The Mules (2-1) broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the sixth in a 9-1 triumph over host Wilson Friday afternoon. Hannah Phillips tossed a complete game. The freshman got out of a jam in the fifth before Solanco's offense exploded. Phillips fanned 11 while yielding four hits and two walks.
"Hannah threw really well," coach Brett Miller said. "She had decent velocity at times. We're looking for consistency and she's still working on her command. She really battled. The strike zone, at times, was challenging, but she fought through that which is a good sign." The Mules played good defense behind Phillips. Freshman second baseman Kate Sheaffer cleanly fielded several grounders and did a nice job of covering the first base bag on bunts. Shortstop Randi Rambo also had a strong game. "We've got to keep improving our defense and only give teams three outs an inning," said Miller. Ahead 2-1, Solanco sent 12 batters to the plate and tallied seven times in the sixth. Cait Armstrong was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Liz Mowrer was 2 for 4 including a double off the top of the fence. Last Wednesday, Solanco downed visiting Red Lion 10-5. Allison McDowell collected three hits and four RBIs to spark the Mules' offense. Abby Heidelbaugh, Sydney Sturgill, and Rambo each recorded two RBIs. Solanco took advantage of three errors to score in the first. Sturgill reached on an error, went to third on an dropped fly ball, and scored when Red Lion misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Armstrong. In the second, Sturgill singled to left to plate courtesy runner Alyssa Henretty. The Mules tacked on four more in the third. With one out, Brianna Firlein reached on an error and scored on Rambo's triple to left. Following a pitching change, Burger walked and McDowell tripled to plate a pair of runs. McDowell added a two-run single in the fourth and eventually scored on a groundout by Heidelbaugh. Kalyn Burger earned the win. She allowed 12 hits and one walk while fanning five. "Kalyn pitched a good, solid game," Miller said. "It's important to get that first win. She showed a lot of composure and the experience you expect from a veteran pitcher." After struggling on defense in the season-opening loss to Pequea Valley, Solanco improved mightily last week. "The defense made the plays that had to be made," Miller said. Comments are closed.
