Solanco's softball team posted a pair of victories last week in two vastly different ways. The Mules walloped McCaskey 17-0 in three innings last Wednesday. Liz Mowrer was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and scored three runs. Bekah Borcky also went 3 for 4, doubled, knocked in two, and scored two runs. Randi Rambo was 3 for 4 with a double. Sydney Sturgill had two hits and an RBI, and scored twice. Winning pitcher Hanna Phillips fanned five and gave up one hit and no walks.
"It's one of those games where we had the opportunity to get everybody into the game," Mules coach Brett Miller said. "We got the result we were looking for and no one got hurt. Then you move on. Coming off the Hempfield game [two days earlier], you want to make sure there's no emotional letdown and we stayed focused enough to win." On Monday, April 25, Solanco dealt Hempfield its first league loss of the season, 2-0. "It was a big win," Miller said. "It helps a great deal in the section standings and district rankings." All three of Solanco's hits came in the second inning when the Mules scored the only two runs of the game. Rambo led off with a single up the middle. Kalyn Burger laid down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error put runners on the corners. Rambo scored when Sturgill was retired on a ground ball. Burger moved to third on Kate Sheaffer's bloop single to left and scored when Borcky drilled a line drive off the glove of the second baseman. "Collectively, it was one of our best games of the season, but we still could've struck the ball a little better," said Miller. "They made a couple of errors, but it's one thing to have the other teams make mistakes and another to take advantage of them. We've been able to do that." Phillips scattered eight hits and recorded three strikeouts. "Hanna had her best game of the year," Miller said. "Her pitch count was in the 90s which is a good sign because she allowed them to hit the ball and the defense made the plays." The shortstop Rambo made several nice plays and the second baseman Sheaffer made a couple of good grabs on popups. Left fielder Cait Armstrong made a sliding catch. Friday's game vs. Ephrata was postponed by rain and rescheduled for Tuesday, March 3. The Mules are 10-4 overall, 8-3 league, heading into the final five games of the season. "We're right in the mix for the league title and district playoffs," Miller said. Comments are closed.
