The Solanco boys basketball team suffered its 13th straight loss, a 61-41 setback to host Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday night, January 23. Ethan Clary scored 10 points to pace the Mules. Ryan Smith notched nine. Colesen Sheaffer, Zed Baker, and Tyler Burger each added six.
Garden Spot 55, Solanco 49 Slow starts in the first and third quarters doomed the Solanco boys basketball team to a loss to visiting Garden Spot Tuesday, January 21. The Spartans outscored Solanco 8-3 to start the game and 15-4 to begin the second half. "Both halves, we started off poorly," Solanco coach David Long said. "I think, the beginning of the game we let a couple of their guys we said are shooters get wide-open looks, both the first quarter and third quarter. I don't know what that is. I think we get a lot better when we are in the flow of the game and I don't know what we need to do to change that, where we come out of the locker room after a break, we get scatter-brained. Two or three minutes into a game, we relax and get into a flow. I don't know what that is, but it's definitely something we've got to figure out." The Mules quickly dug out of the early five-point deficit. Colesen Sheaffer and Jalen Henry each scored then Sheaffer hit a three-pointer with two seconds left in the first quarter to put Solanco in front 10-8. Garden Spot's Brendan Weaver and Andrew Zenter hit three-pointers to key an eight-point burst before Solanco responded with a 12-2 run to regain the lead, 22-18. Henry and Sheaffer each hit a three-pointer in that stretch, The Spartans scored the last seven points of the half for a three-point edge. Garden Spot broke the game open in the third quarter. Zenter knocked down three three-pointers and added another basket as the visitors extended the margin to 14. "The gameplan on [Zenter] is to run him off the [three-point] line," said Long. "Literally run past him and make him rip through and drive. The theory on that is he settles on 15-foot jumpers. For whatever reason, the third quarter we just come out contesting and challenging him. I burned a timeout to stop that. We had a guy saying, 'Well, I challenged the shot.' He's 6-7. It doesn't matter." Solanco did not go away quietly. The hosts tallied the final six points of the third quarter and six of the first seven in the final period to slice the deficit down to 41-38 with 6:13 left. That would be as close as the Mules could come. Garden Spot scored seven straight points to push the advantage back up to 10 and led by at least five the rest of the way. "I think we're really learning how to put a full four quarters and a full gameplan together," Long said. Comments are closed.
