It was a happy Senior Night for the Solanco girls basketball team. After honoring their five seniors prior to the game, the Mules defeated Garden Spot 33-24. The Spartans led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter before the Mules switched from man-to-man defense to a zone. Solanco outscored the visitors 12-6 in the second quarter to take command.
"It was a good team effort," coach Chad McDowell said. "We played good defense and had good ball movement on offense." It was the final home game for seniors Rachel Trout, Haley Conklin, Taylor Stitz, Megan Yannutz and Brittany Rhodes. "This is an awesome group of seniors," McDowell said. "I am honored that I had the opportunity and privilege to be part of their senior season on the basketball court. They have embraced this program, led by example and have made many memories both on and off the court. They all have had to endure a lot over the four years and I am very happy that they were able to pick up a win on their final home game on senior night. I am very proud of them." When all five seniors were on the court together, they only allowed one Garden Spot point. "That's quite a testament to the teamwork they have developed together," McDowell said. "That is an awesome accomplishment." The coach said the Mules may have been too fired up at the start. "Emotions were running high," said McDowell. "Everyone was amped up. It was a big night and once we settled down we played well." Conklin led the Mules with eight points and added three steals. Yannutz recorded six points, eight rebounds and three assist. Cayla Robinson supplied six points and Trout had five points. Nikki Boultinghouse chipped in five points and three boards. The Mules led 24-21 when Boultinghouse hit a basket and then a three-pointer to extend the lead to eight with about four minutes left. Stitz collected four points and five rebounds. Solanco lost 49-32 to Lebanon Tuesday, January 27. Momentum turned late in the first half. With the score tied at 19, Lebanon hit two three-pointers including one at the buzzer to take a six-point lead. The Mules played a triangle-and-two defense in attempt to slow down Lebanon's top two players. They combined for just 14 points. "Unfortunately in the second half we did not do a good job on the boards," said McDowell. "They got second, third, and fourth opportunities and that really hurt us, especially in the third quarter." Lebanon outscored the Mules 17-8 in the third quarter. "If we had done a better job on the boards it probably would've been a different outcome," said McDowell. Stitz had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists. Boultinghouse added seven points and six boards. Robinson posted six points and Trout had five points, three rebounds and three steals. Yannutz chipped in four points and six rebounds and Jen Eberly had two points, six rebounds and two assists. The Mules close out the season Tuesday, February 3 at Ephrata. The Solanco JV team notched a pair of victories. The Mules upended Garden Spot 25-17. Solanco led 17-1 at halftime. Paige Borcky led the way with 13 points and Kaitlyn Borkcy added four. Solanco worked overtime to down Lebanon 42-35. After a slow start, the Mules used a 16-3 run stretching over the first and second quarters to go on top 18-13. Lebanon bounced back and had a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter. The Mules outscored the Cedars 7-0 in the extra session. Paige Borcky (10 points) made 3 of 4 free throws and Makenzie Dillinger made both of her foul shots. Boultinghouse scored 15 points to pace Solanco. Comments are closed.
