Solanco's girls basketball team split a pair of games last week, winning a section game and losing a non-league contest. The Mules lost 43-41 to New Oxford Saturday afternoon, January 4, in the West York Shootout. The game was tied 22-22 at halftime before New Oxford outscored Solanco 12-6 in the third quarter. "In the third quarter there were two areas we did not execute well enough and that was the difference in the game," Mules' coach Chad McDowell said. "First, we turned the ball over too many times (10 turnovers). We attacked New Oxford's press ineffectively and they capitalized on our turnovers. Secondly, we got some good looks at the basket but we could not convert our shots. We shot 27 percent in the third quarter. We make two or three more shots and it's a much different look to the game and possibly the outcome. The fourth quarter we found a decent offensive rhythm and made some shots (50 percent from the field). We were able to get some good dribble penetration and Jenna (Dombach) hit a few threes to help close the gap
With about three minutes to play, New Oxford went to their delay game which forced us to start fouling to extend the game. This was effective as New Oxford went 3-10 from the foul line and gave us an opportunity." Dombach finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Jade Eshelman notched nine points. Ilynd Rapant recorded eight points and four boards. Paige Phillips collected eight points, four rebounds, and four steals. "Overall I was pleased with our team effort and how we competed," McDowell said. "There were positives to take away from this effort. We need to work on eliminating the miscues throughout a game and the mental mistakes we are making. We enter back into section play Tuesday still in first place. We have a lot to play for over the next few weeks and we can control a lot of what happens. I am excited for the next few weeks." Solanco 48, Garden Spot 35 Jenna Dombach (18 points) drilled a pair of three-pointers during a 13-2 first quarter run and the Mules led the rest of the way. After the Spartans scored the game's first basket, Jade Eshelman answered with two free throws and a field goal. A Dombach three-pointer supplied Solanco with a 7-2 edge. Following a Garden Spot basket, Ilynd Rapant made a free throw, Paige Phillips scored, and Dombach knocked down another trifecta. Dombach hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter and Arianna Seiberlich made two straight threes. Solanco led 28-18 at the break. "First half, we shot very well from three," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "When we penetrate and get good kick-outs we should be able to get good looks from the outside. With Jenna, Arianna, Paige, Sammi (Jackson) we should be able to get good looks on a kick-out. If we bring it down and don't move the ball first we're going to struggle to get that shot off. When we penetrate, get the ball in the middle then kick-out to a shooter and the shooter is open and in rhythm, it's going to be a better shot for us. We did that much better." Dombach had seven points and Eshelman added four as Solanco began the third quarter with an 11-2 spurt to extend its lead to 39-20. The Mules got a big boost with the return of Phillips, who had been out after suffering a concussion. "Having Paige back is very important for our program," McDowell said. "She gives us some scoring that we were lacking over the last two weeks. She can put the ball in the basket. She struggled a little bit [Friday night]. She was pressing a little bit, anxious to get back. She was working at ramp speed so her brain and body were moving faster than they needed to be. She just needs to calm down and get back to her rhythm and style and she'll be fine." Comments are closed.
