Solanco's girls basketball team is happy to say goodbye to crossover games. The Mules dropped their last two games against Section One foes after posting a win over Penn Manor. McCaskey upended Solanco 70-43 Friday night. "It was a tough game," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "Going in, we knew it was going to be tough. McCaskey is a quality program and a quality team." McCaskey outscored the Mules 23-5 in the second quarter to take a 41-15 halftime lead. "We held our own in the first quarter but we turned the ball over in the second quarter and they got easy transition points. Our transition defense was poor. We didn't get back on defense and they got easy layups." Grace Kreider led Solanco with nine points and added three steals and two assists. Gabby Rossi recorded eight points, two rebounds, and two assists. Liz Mowrer also scored eight points. Aleksa Burger supplied seven points and two assists. Kara McClune contributed three points, three steals, and two rebounds. Jen Eberly had a point, four rebounds, and three assists. Nikki Boultinghouse chipped in seven points and six boards. Last Wednesday, the Mules lost 60-37 to Manheim Township. "Township is a very solid team," said McDowell. "They are solid on offense and solid on defense and they're very well-coached. They outplayed us for the entire game. They're a better team." Township outscored Solanco 20-9 in the third quarter to go up 47-23. "They have five girls who can score and we tried to limit a couple of them," said McDowell. "We saw why they are contenders for the section and league titles and will do well in districts. They got a lot of points around the basket and shot the ball well." Rossi collected 13 points, four assists, and three steals. Boultinghouse posted 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Burger provided six points and four rebounds. Jess Cabrera had four points. Eberly added two points, nine rebounds, and five steals. On Monday, January 11, Solanco defeated Penn Manor 47-30. The Mules led 24-18 at halftime before the Comets closed to within 27-25 midway through the third quarter. "We challenged them to step up their game, to focus and execute, and to put [Penn Manor] away," McDowell said. Solanco did just that, ending the game on a 20-5 run. "They really responded," McDowell said of his squad. "It was a good team effort. They executed, made their foul shots, and didn't turn the ball over. They did what they needed to do to put the game away. It was great to see. It shows me they know how to put it all together." Boultinghouse had a huge game with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Used as a perimeter player early in her career, McDowell is pleased with the transition she's made to the post. "Nikki had done an awesome job. She embraced playing more in the post and has done a great job. We're excited she's only a junior and will be back next season." Kreider registered seven points and seven rebounds. Cabrera collected seven points, three assists, and two steals. Burger scored five points. Eberly notched four points and 10 boards. Rossi had four rebounds and three assists. Mowrer added three points and three rebounds. The Mules have six games left and McDowell hasn't given up hope of a league playoff spot. "It's very important that we play well and continue to grow and get better," said McDowell. "We're three games out [of a league playoff berth] with five league games to go. It should be interesting. Anybody can beat anybody. I'm looking forward to it. We want to close out the season strong and start to build for next year." Comments are closed.
