The Solanco boys basketball team dropped a pair of games in its holiday tournament including a heartbreaker in the opening round. Manheim Central downed the Mules 62-41 in the consolation game Saturday afternoon, December 28.
Austin Woods paced Solanco with 12 points. Zed Baker provided nine. Jalen Henry had eight and Colesen Sheaffer and Ethan Clary each supplied six. Central led 42-34 through three quarters before blowing the game open. Conestoga Valley 43, Solanco 42 Sometimes you just have to credit the opposition. CV's Luke Rumbaugh made a difficult shot just before the buzzer to lift the visitors to a victory Friday, December 27 in the opening round of the Solanco Holiday Tournament. Trailing by a point, the Buckskins inbounded the ball under their own basket with eight seconds remaining. Rumbaugh dribbled down the middle toward the free throw line, cut quickly to his left, and his off-balance runner rolled around and in to give CV a dramatic win. "It's tough," Solanco coach David Long said. "But at the same time, that's a good player and we did a good job on him most of the night. The reality is that's the kind of shot we wanted. We forced him into a shot from outside the paint on one foot. It doesn't sting any less but I'm proud of my guys to be able to execute in that moment...It's emotionally frustrating, but logically, you tip your hat to them. He made a good shot." Just as it had in a two-point loss to Northern Lebanon in its previous game, Solanco was in front most of the way. The Mules led 22-11 three minutes into the second quarter. CV responded with a 20-5 run spanning the final five minutes of the second quarter and the first four of the third quarter to take its first lead, 31-27. "Our big thing is taking good shots and not worrying about the results," said Long. "I think in those stretches a lot of times we just don't make shots. I think we consistently get the same looks and I think mentally we need to be a little bit tougher. When we miss one, have enough confidence to think the next one is going in. I think we miss one then we get a little cold. The stretch I think of is the third quarter where we missed four layups and we came to the bench and thought, 'We need to run something else. This isn't working.' Our stuff is working. We just need to hit the shots." Solanco trailed 39-34 before scoring six straight capped by an Ethan Clary steal and layup with 3:11 left. CV hit two free throws to reclaim the lead but missed the front end of a one-and-one after a Mules turnover. Solanco was whistled for an offensive foul with 27 seconds left but CV made an errant pass and the Mules' Ryan Smith was fouled while chasing the loose ball. Smith coolly sank both free throws to put his team ahead 42-41 with 8.3 seconds to go. Comments are closed.
