by Bud Hart In a game closer than the score suggests, Donegal earned a 63-45 win over the Golden Mules at Solanco on Tuesday, January 10. The Indians were led by senior Rachel Robinson, who took game scoring honors with 29. Kiera Baughman (18) and Carly Dieffenderfer (14) also scored in double digits for Donegal. Robinson, a Division I field hockey recruit, is impressive according to Solanco head coach Chad McDowell. “She did an outstanding job controlling the paint,” said McDowell. “She is a strong athletic forward who we had no answer for.” The Mules tried different defensive sets, double teamed her and nothing seemed to work, McDowell said. Despite Robinson’s dominance inside it remained a competitive game. That’s because Solanco’s Grace Kreider had the night of her season. The sophomore guard canned six of ten triples, went three for three from two-point range, pulled down six rebounds and made two steals. “Grace got into a good shooting rhythm, said McDowell. “She had some open looks and she was able to knock down her shot”.
With five minutes to play the margin was only eight points, but in an attempt to slow things down, the Mules fouled. Donegal rose to the occasion making 31 out of 38 at the charity stripe for an 81.6-percent completion ratio. Both Nikki Boultinghouse and Kreider fouled out late in the contest. The Mules were not as proficient at the foul line connecting on five of 12 attempts (41.7 percent). Held scoreless in Tuesday night action, Boultinghouse had a huge night inside for her Golden Mule teammates ending the night with 19 points in a 57-43 win for Solanco at Garden Spot on Friday, January 13. “I thought Nikki played with a passion,” said Coach McDowell. “She did not force things; she let the game come to her. When she was open she looked to score, but when the defense collapsed on her she was patient and found the open player. Solanco jumped out to an early lead and never trailed taking a 34-25 lead to the locker room at the half. Experiencing some foul trouble early, McDowell went to his bench and praised the efforts of Katie Sheaffer, Alyssa Henretty, Elaina Daily, Kara McClune and Liz Mowrer. “They did a great job maintaining our lead,” added McDowell. Garden Spot did make it interesting in the third quarter narrowing the margin to three, but, following a Mule timeout, some changes were made to the Solanco defense causing the Spartans to miss some shots and turn the ball over. “We were able to capitalize on those miscues and pushed our lead back up,” he said. In JV action the Mules lost their second game of the season to the Spartans 36-29. Kara McClune led in the scoring column with 10 points. She was followed by Hanna Phillips (6), Liz Mowrer (5) and Katie Sheaffer (4). Both Alyssa Henretty and Mackenzie Gladfelter scored two. Comments are closed.
