The Solanco girls basketball team lost two games last week. The Mules (1-3) fell to visiting Cedar Crest 63-37 Friday night. Reigning league champion Cedar Crest jumped out to a 21-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Post player Alyssa Austin scored 11 points in the opening eight minutes. "She did what she wanted to do inside," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "She's one of the best players in the league." The Mules trimmed the deficit down to 25-17 at halftime. "We were able to win the second and fourth quarters," said McDowell. "We were able to put some pressure on them with a press and trapping defense."
Austin and Ariel Jones each scored eight points in the third quarter as the visitors put the game out of reach. "We did play well in spurts," said McDowell. "There were a lot of positives with our up tempo game and transition. We were able to make some shots in the fourth quarter after not shooting well in the first three quarters. The biggest thing I got out of it was we played hard the entire game. That shows the heart and passion they have." Jess Cabrera had a team-high 11 points for Solanco. Nikki Boultinghouse had nine points and three steals. Gabby Rossi recorded six points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Liz Mowrer supplied four points. Grace Kreider collected three points, three rebounds, and two assists. Aleksa Burger provided three points, five rebounds, and five steals. Jen Eberly pulled down five rebounds to go along with one point. McDowell said Friday night's toy drive was a huge success. The drive collected 278 toys which were distributed the next day. "It was a great event and well-supported," said McDowell. "Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the toy drive and the Solanco girls basketball program. It was great for the program to participate in a worthy cause and give back to the community. We hope to make it an annual event and collect even more toys last year." On Wednesday, Cedar Cliff downed the Mules 68-35. "Cedar Cliff is a quality program and a well-balanced team," McDowell said. "They'll be one of the contenders in District 1. We played well in spurts again but you can tell they have a good program." Cabrera registered 10 points and three rebounds. Rossi added nine points, three steals, and three assists. Boultinghouse notched eight points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Burger had three points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Kreider recorded two points, five rebounds and two steals. Eberly added two points and four rebounds. "We played hard and we're learning," McDowell said. "I told the girls we weren't beaten by teams, we were beaten by programs. That's what we're trying to build. We're getting better every day. It will all come together eventually." The Mules host Hempfield Wednesday and Elizabethtown Friday. Comments are closed.
