The Solanco girls cross country team went 3-1 in the first home meet of the season Tuesday, October 6. The Mules defeated Warwick 25-30, Columbia 15-55, Lebanon 15-55, and lost to Ephrata 23-34. Solanco's Cortney Johnson recorded a very solid time of 20:41 to finish second. The junior's time places her fourth on the all-time list for the Mules' home course and second all-time for Solanco girls. "Cortney had a fantastic finish in a very tough field," Mules coach Craig Ausel said. Warwick’s Samantha Shields and Johnson both knocked off previously undefeated Jordan Haberstroh of Columbia.
Solanco junior Morgan Perry ran another strong race, catching and overtaking Warwick’s number two girl and the Ephrata number four girl in the final mile. Perry placed seventh in 21:46. Senior Essi Glah-Fisher finished third for the Solanco in 10th place overall. "Essi has scored big points as our third girl this season," said Ausel. The Mules got a boost with the return of Aubree Roop, who had been out with a knee injury. Roop finished in front of the Warwick fourth and fifth runners in 12th place overall. Ausel said Christen Esposito "played a giant part" in the win against Warwick. "Just before the mile mark, Christen had nine Warwick girls in front of her she caught and passed five of them to secure the win as our fifth runner," he said. The Solanco boys were 2-2, downing Columbia 15-55 and Lebanon 21-43 and losing to Warwick 26-30 and Ephrata 22-33. "The boys have been fighting hard to reach an above .500 record by the end of the year," said Ausel. "We are very proud of their efforts. They walked away at 2-2 and narrowly missed an extra win over Warwick. The good news is that we had some exceptionally good times on our tough course." The first four boys topped the previous course record time of 17:15 posted by John Ausel in 2011. "These four runners ran very strong races and really fed on each other to record quality times," said Craig Ausel, Solanco’s Liam Hodgson finished third with a time of 17:07. "Liam knew what he needed to do," Ausel said. "He ran head to head with two of the very best runners in our league for three miles." Sophomore Patrick Workman was ninth in 18:51 and freshman Ben Stickler was 10th in 18:55. "Breaking the 19-minute barrier on our course is a great accomplishment for young runners," Ausel said. Rounding out the scoring was senior Keith Carnrike in 19:26 and Connor Neaves 19.42. "Despite these great performances, we lacked enough depth to beat the Warwick fourth and fifth runners," said Ausel. Rounding out a young Mule squad were Ian Brown 19:47, Christen Stead 20:12, Alec Munro 20:26, Tim Fetterman 20:30, Dan Riddell 20:34, Thomas 20:36, Aidan McBride 20:43, Jose Serrano-Silva 20:50, Dan Keller 21:11, Brandon Smyth 21:45, Josh Herr 21:54, Damian Martinez 22:09, Marshall Kinnamon 22:44, David Simms 22:55, Payton Strang 23:37, Patrick Sweda 24:32, Patrick Hodgson 24:45, Noah Huyett 25:20, and Jason Wyatt 26:08.
