by Bud Hart In a nail biter on Tuesday, January 10, Solanco's boys varsity basketball team escaped from Mount Joy with a 55-54 win. The Mules held a five-point advantage at the half, 36-31, but the Indians held the Mules to single digit scoring, 7, to end the third quarter tightening up the lead. “The second half was a dogfight,” said Coach Scott Long. “Donegal played a 2-3 zone the entire second half and for some reason it bothered us.” Robbie McHugh took team scoring honors with 18, and Jon Rush connected on four treys to follow with 12 points. “Down three with 1:30 to go, junior Jon Rush hit a game tying three,” said the coach. McHugh grabbed an offensive rebound on the next Mule possession putting it up and in to give the Mules the win. Aaron Constein also ended in double digits with 10. Dylan Hastings was held to eight points and Mike Worthington ended with seven.
Long said it wasn’t one of the Mules better nights, but he witnessed some high points. “I was particularly pleased with the fact that our guys took three charges in the game,” said Long. “Each one was truly a game changer.” The Mules trampled the Garden Spot Spartans by a 70-50 margin at home on Friday, January 13. Hastings had an outstanding game, blocking shots grabbing rebounds (12), causing turnovers and pumping in 34 points, including seven for eight from the foul line. McHugh also hit double digits with 13 points, most on transitions and great feeds. Kilgore nailed two triples and went two for two from the charity stripe for eight. Braden Redcay came off the bench and scored eight points. Constein added four points and Worthington three points, going three for four from the charity stripe and dishing off nine assists. Crisp passes, limited turnovers, a 15 for 18 (83.3 percent) completion ratio at the line and high shot completion ratio from the floor worked well for the home team. The Spartans trailed the Mules by 10 at the half and 20 after the third quarter. Solanco turned a fourth quarter Garden Spot technical into a four-point play when Hastings connected on both foul attempts and slammed one into the net on the incoming possession. On Saturday, January 14, the Mules played Elco in a non-league contest pulling out a 63-60 win. “The first quarter was pretty remarkable, as the teams combined for nine triples,” said Long. “Elco shot the ball extremely well all game and connected on 13 three-pointers on the night.” Hastings had 15 points in the first half and Elco started the second half double teaming him. That opened it up for seniors Kilgore and McHugh. Kilgore knocked down 12 second half points and McHugh 13. “We are currently sitting at 9-6 overall and are right in the thick of both District and League playoff races,” said Long. “Our guys are working hard, getting better, and there isn’t another group of guys I would rather go to battle with.” Comments are closed.
