On Friday, September 1, the Mules opened up their season hosting the Pottstown Trojans, a District I team from out of the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s Frontier Division. The Mules dominated the Trojans in this one sending them home with a 48-19 loss.
Solanco scored first when Sam Buckwalter intercepted a pass. Nick Yunnutz led the way with two bursts through the middle for good gains setting the stage for Alex McDonald, who ran the pigskin in from nine yards out for six at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter. Evan Salisbury’s point after attempt was good making the score 7-0 Mules. With 15-seconds on the clock, Nafis Moore ran it in from nine yards out to give the home team a 14-point advantage. Again, Salisbury’s kick was on target. Brandon Doubts intercepted a Trojan pass at Pottstown’s 20-yard line as the quarter ended. This time quarterback Joel McGuire called his own number running the ball in from three yards out. Salisbury was again successful on the point after attempt giving Solanco a 21-point advantage. Solanco’s Corey Stively intercepted a Pottstown pass, but the Mules fumbled on their first play from scrimmage setting up a Trojan score. The visitors applied some trickery by employing the halfback option pass good for a Trojan TD with 2:57 left in the second quarter. The play covered 49-yards. The PAT was good and the scoreboard read Solanco 21 – Pottstown 7. The point margin was soon 21 again when McDonald gathered in the kick following the Trojan TD and ran it back 85 yards for a Mule TD with 2:42 left in the half. To add insult to injury, Doubts recovered a Trojan fumble on a fourth and nine and ran 96-yards for a Mule TD, their fifth of the half, with 28-seconds remaining. The Mules received the kick to open the second half and McDonald was heroic again, this time racing into the end zone for six from 79-yards out. Grace Kreider attempted the PAT, but the kick fell short. Solanco’s last score on the night came at the 5:04 mark of the third quarter when McGuire scampered into the Trojan end zone from three yards out. This time Kreider drilled the ball through the uprights giving Solanco a 48-7 advantage. Pottstown scored two TD’s late, but the outcome was never in doubt. Cole Lewis played a huge defensive role with a huge sack and key tackles, and McGuire didn’t need the pass to control the offense. On Friday, September 8, the Mules travel to Conestoga Valley, who defeated Ephrata 49-7, to open up their season. Game time is 7 p.m. Comments are closed.
