Solanco's Troy Miller won three gold medals at the Lancaster-Lebanon Track and Field Championship Meet and teammate Billy Cooney captured two titles. Miller prevailed in the 200 meter dash, long jump, and high jump. After setting a personal best of 22.02 in the 200 trials on Friday, he came back and leaned out a win in Saturday's final. The Mules' senior jumped a personal best 23-3 to take the long jump for a second straight season and tied his PR of 6-8 in winning the high jump.
Cooney swept both hurdles events for the second straight year. Miller, Cooney, Prosper Eguzouwa and Eric Hopkins teamed for a second place finish in the 4 x 100 relay. Noah McCardell was third in the javelin with a throw of 180-10. The Solanco boys (64 points) finished third in the team standings behind champion McCaskey (88) and Cedar Crest (69). On the girls side, Solanco, seniors Cameron Trimble and Cayla Robinson performed well. Trimble threw 102-7 to earn a fifth place in the discus and came back Saturday to throw a 105-8 in the javelin to place sixth. Robinson was fourth in the javelin (108-2). "Both teams performed well all season," coach Ivan Haines said. The boys finished second in the section and earned the sportsmanship award. Solanco athletes dancing to districts: Miller in the 200 meters, high jump, long jump and the 4 x 100 relay. Billy Cooney in the 110 and 300 hurdles plus the 4 x 100 relay. McCardell in the javelin. Hopkins and Eguzouwa will compete in the 100 meter dash and 4 x 100 relay. Jen Eberly qualified in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles and the long jump. In the final regular season meet on Monday, May 9, Solanco's boys routed host Lampeter-Strasburg 100-50 Monday, May 9. As usual, Solanco was sparked by its great group of seniors. Cooney broke his own school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.0. He also won the 300 hurdles. Miller continues to dominate the jumps, earning wins in the long and high jumps. He also finished first in the 100 meter dash (11.0) to add that event to his list of district qualifiers. Cooney, Miller, Hopkins and Eguzouwa teamed to take the 4 x 100 relay. Three Solanco seniors won a throwing event as the Mules captured 23 out of a possible 27 points in those events. Gary Doubts won the shot put (44-7), Kyle Williams prevailed in the discus (113-10), and McCardell took the javelin (159-1). Senior Dennis Mitchem triumphed in the 400 (53.3). Senior Liam Hodgson captured the 800 meter run (2:06.6). "These seniors will be greatly missed," coach Ivan Haines said. "Behind the seniors is a great group of underclassmen. They were able to earn many second and thirds and 10 personal records. Next year these underclassmen are capable to fill in where the seniors ended." Robbie McHugh won the triple jump (40-3.5). In the girls competition, Lampeter-Strasburg triumphed 107-43. The girls had a tough go of it," said Haines. "L-S has a well-rounded team. They have individuals who were capable of scoring in all the events. L-S outscored us in every area. We were also without some of our distance girls who were out sick." Eberly picked up both Solanco wins, taking the 100 hurdles in 16.4 and the long jump (11-11.75). "The girls were able to produce 10 PRs in the meet," Haines said. "It was also nice to see that the scoring was done by underclassmen. Given another year of experience, these girls will make up a core of a very good team." Comments are closed.
