JV AND VARSITY PHOTOS: Cabrera nears 1,000-point mark as Solanco girls basketball upends Octorara1/18/2019
Entering Thursday night's game against outmanned Octorara, the Solanco girls basketball team wanted to use its entire roster while winning without suffering any injuries, hone a variety of offensive sets, and put Jess Cabrera in position to score her 1,000th career point at home. The Mules easily accomplished their objectives by beating the Braves 87-8. Cabrera poured in 30 points to raise her total to 985. The senior guard has a chance to hit the milestone at home Tuesday night vs. Garden Spot before Solanco travels to Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday night for a game that could determine the Section Three champion.
"The girls wanted to get her the ball," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "They would like her to score so she could do it at home. We're going to take it when it comes. I'm not worried about when she gets it. Hopefully, it's at home. If not, we'll do it at L-S on Thursday." The Mules scored the first points of the game and the final 43 of the half to take a 53-2 lead at the break. "We were able to work our offenses," McDowell said. "We worked both our man and zone offenses, in the second half in particular. Even in the second quarter, we were able to work those. We were able to get some good shots up and work on our shooting. We played 2-3 zone. We played some man-to-man in the first half. Those were some things we needed to work on. The girls played hard on every possession. That's all I can ask. They did what they needed to do." Twelve different players scored for Solanco. Paige Phillips provided 11. MacKenzie Gladfelter and Jade Eshelman each scored eight points. Kara McClune added six and Aleksa Burger and Jenna Dombach chipped in five apiece Solanco defeated host Manheim Central 64-38 Tuesday night, January 15. "We played well," McDowell said. "We got up and down the court. Close first quarter, 14-12. It took us a little bit of time to get used to being in that gym again. That gym is always tough to play in. I thought we did a nice job adjusting. We had a big second and third quarter run. Solanco shot 43 percent from three-point distance, 10-for-23. "Our shots started to fall, which is always good in that tough gym up there," said McDowell. "We used our pressure and got some steals, used our athleticism and took care of what we needed to take care of up there, and got the result we needed." Cabrera collected 15 points, five assists, and two steals. Burger recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. Phillips contributed 10 points. McClune supplied eight points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Grace Kreider added five points, four steals, and two assists. Eshelman posted four points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Ilynd Rapant registered four points. Dombach delivered three points, four rebounds, and three assists. Gladfelter had two points, 11 rebounds, and a pair of assists. Cabrera is trying to become the seventh 1,000-point scorer in the girls basketball program's history and would join Denine Groff, Lori Houck, Taylor Kreider, Emily Allport, Makenzie Keys, and Gillian Glackin in that exclusive club. Solanco's JV squad earned two victories last week. The Mules mauled Octorara 43-4 Thursday night. Kendal Janssen led Solanco with 10 points. Rapant recorded five and Hannah Wood and Piper Graham each added four. Solanco downed Manheim Central 49-28 Tuesday, January 15. Graham paced the Mules with 13. Rapant contributed eight and Ella Bailey supplied six. Comments are closed.
