Solanco's boys basketball team opened the season by splitting two games at the Northeastern Tip-Off Tournament. The Mules downed Northern York 50-40 in the consolation game Saturday. Solanco got out to an 8-0 lead and led the rest of the way. "We felt like we could beat them by putting pressure on the ball," coach Scott Long said. "We did a good job of pressuring them and created turnovers which led to some easy baskets." All-Tournament Team selection Dylan Hastings paced the Mules with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Robbie McHugh and Desmond Kreider each added 12 points.
"It was a balanced effort," said Long. "We got contributions from everybody." The Mules lost 63-57 to Red Lion in the first round Friday. "Red Lion is a big school and they have a very good team," said Long. Solanco led by as many as 10 points and had an eight-point lead at halftime. "I kind of expected Red Lion would make a run," Long said. "As a young team we don't have experience playing with a lead. I thought it would end up being a close game and it was." The Mules took a one-point lead with 70 seconds remaining when Desmond Kreider stole the ball at midcourt, scored, drew a foul, and converted the free throw for a three-point play. But Red Lion was able to regain the lead and pull away in the final minute. Kreider finished with a team-high 15 points. "Desmond was the best player on the floor is this game," said Long. "He made a lot of big baskets." Hastings had 10 points and 14 rebounds and Taylor Dombach delivered 12 points. "We had a lot of guys step up and play well," said Long. "The experience of playing in close games is going to help us." The Mules have three road games this week – Sun Valley on Tuesday, Donegal on Wednesday and the league opener Friday against Cedar Crest. Comments are closed.
