by Bud Hart Manheim Central's Barons took a shutout victory home after visiting Solanco on Monday afternoon, October 30. The Barons scored early and often. Their first touchdown came less than a minute into the game when sophomore Colby Wagner gathered the opening kickoff and ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Solanco was forced to punt on its first possession and Central took over on its own 40. The Barons needed just five plays to cover the distance, scoring on Wagner's 34 yard scamper. This time, Central's Chris Shaw broke into the end zone and the Barons were leading 14-0.
Solanco sustained a good drive on their next possession with Shaneef Carter picking up 42 yards on a gallop into Baron territory. The drive was stopped at Manheim’s 28 yard line when Central’s Brooklyn Bicksler intercepted a Mule pass giving the Barons a first and 10 at their own 20. Ten plays later Manheim struck again on a Nick Griest plunge from three yards out to give the visitors their third TD of the half. Griest added two more to the score on the successful points after attempt to light up the scoreboard showing Manheim Central 22 – Solanco 0 with 4:15 left in the half. Another Mule turnover led to a Manheim TD. On first and 10, the Mule’s QB tossed a pitchout behind the line of scrimmage. The ball was mis-handled by the intended Mule runner and the Central’s Bicksler scooped it up from 27 yards out running it in for the score and giving the visitors a 28-0 lead at the half. Although the Barons would add one more TD to their total, the Mules proved formidable in the second half on some great defensive stands. The Mule’s Logan Shenk and Matt Weicksel made some minus yardage stops that held the Barons offense to the single score. That score came on the Barons first possession of the second half, a 12-play drive that culminated on a J. D Grube 26-yard pass completion to Shaw. Shaw ran the ball in for two and with 40-seconds left in the third quarter the score read Barons 36 – Mules 0. Solanco mounted their most serious attempt at scoring following the Central TD. Starting at their own 20 yard line, a Grady Unger pitchout to Kashawn Carter churned up 35-yards into Baron territory. The Mules got to within the Baron six-yard line on big runs by Unger and Shaneef Carter. The drive ended when Solanco fumbled inside the 10 on a first and goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Central threatened again when Griest broke through the tackles and raced to the outside on a 43 yard burst. An unsportsmanlike penalty moved the ball back inside Baron territory. The Mule defense stiffened and the clock ran out with the Barons looking at a fourth and 14 at the Mule 45. “It was a frustrating game from our perspectives just because of turnovers and mistakes on our part,” said Coach Justin Zellman. “Central took the opening kickoff for a touchdown which obviously set us back from the start.” Despite some offensive struggles Zellman felt Unger and the offensive line did a solid job throughout the game. Those linemen included Jeff Ortlip, Nate Butler, Ian Anderson, Spencer Burrell, David Hileman, German Dominguez, and Daulton Myers. “We were able to move the ball, but we just couldn't finish drives,” added Zellman. Defensive coach Tyler Stitz lauded praise on Shaneef Carter, Hunter Shaw, and Collin Berry, in addition to Shank and Weicksel. Comments are closed.
