It was an offer too good for Rising Sun boys basketball coach Matt Haack to pass up. Haack resigned his coaching post and teaching job at North East High to accept a job in his home state of Michigan. Haack has accepted a science teaching position near Grand Rapids, not too far from where he was raised. He had always considered the possibility of going back home. "It was always on the back-burner," said Haack. "The position was offered and it would've been tough to say no. I talked it over with my family and my fianceé and decided to take it."
Haack has also accepted a basketball coaching job although he's not yet sure if he'll be working with the JV or varsity squad. "It's a nice community and I'm excited about it," he said. "It will be a new challenge. But I have mixed emotions because it's tough to leave the (Rising Sun basketball program) and the community here." Haack spent the last six years as a teacher at North East High where he also served as a coach including with the Indians' girls lacrosse squad. He will be teaching 8th grade science in Michigan. "I'm excited about the new challenge," he said. Haack said he will have fond memories of his three-year stint with the Tigers, most notably last season's win at Elkton and a tournament championship in 2011. "I was so happy for the seniors that we were able to beat Elkton for the first time in a long time," said Haack. "The seniors – Nick Luciano, Spencer McDermott, and Brandon Aro – really came through for us in that game. That was definitely one of my favorite moments." The other major highlight came in Hacck's first season when Rising Sun defeated Tri-State Christian to capture their bracket in Cecil College's holiday high school tournament. "We felt like winners and the boys were grinning from ear to ear," he said. Comments are closed.
