Tennis has finally become Mallory Tiffin's main sport. Tiffin first started playing on the Rising Sun High School team as a way to stay in condition for the field hockey season. She got so good at it she's going to play in college. Tiffin recently signed a letter of intent to attend Waynesburg (Pa.) University. "My goal was to play field hockey in college," said Tiffin. She played field hockey in tournaments in California hoping to land a scholarship." Then Waynesburg contacted her to ask if she was interested in playing tennis. "It was the last school I visited," Tiffin said. "I liked the school so much I decided to play tennis. It also has a good nursing program." Tiffin was a doubles specialist during her Rising Sun career, enjoying an undefeated regular season as a junior alongside Akyra Glaze. This past season, Tiffin and partner Jen Braun were big reasons Rising Sun had a perfect regular season and captured the Susquehanna Division title. Prior to starting high school, Tiffin's tennis career was limited to a pair of summer camps. She started playing at Rising Sun in her freshman year, but never thought she'd wind up playing in college. "Tennis was my side sport," Tiffin said. "I played to stay in shape for field hockey." She will be the first Tiger tennis player in recent history to play in college. Tiffin credits her coach Larry Sickels. "Mr. Sickels pushed me to be a better player," she said. Sickels is proud of Tiffin. "By going to play in college Mallory has done a lot for her school and the county," he said. "We're trying to make tennis an important sport at Rising Sun and what Mallory is doing is a big thing. The coach said Tiffin brought more than tennis ability to the program. "I saw her leadership her sophomore year and it really developed over the last couple years," Sickels said. "She had a positive attitude and was always excited to play tennis. She was a good person for the younger players to look up to and get advice from." Comments are closed.
