BOYS Coach Jim Burkhardt is expecting success from both of his track and field teams. The boys team is a bit more well rounded. Jacob Cohen returns to lead the sprinters. "Jacob will be one of the fastest runners in the county," Burkhardt said. "He is already running impressive times."
Cohen, Ryan Hendrickson, Colin Cascio, (and the graduated Martin Stillwell) were part of the Tigers 4 x 100 relay team which qualified for the state meet last year. "We're still looking for someone to run the other leg of the relay but I think this group will challenge to make it back to states," Burkhardt said. Jose Ramirez, hampered by injury last season, is the top returning 400 runner. Jeremy Fitzgerald has impressed and freshman Michael McCord ran a good time in the scrimmage. Senior Logan Rutherford returns in the 800 and Sean O'Donnell recorded the team's fastest 800 time in preseason. "It's a growing process," Burkhardt said. "We're testing the waters to see who will be the best." Juniors Brandon Brooks and Ryan Lafountaine will lead the distance corps. "They're doing well," said Burkhardt. "It's a young group with a lot of potential." Bryce Brown has experience in the hurdles events. Maurice McCargo and Charles Thurston return in the throws. Thurston is already throwing the discus over 100 feet in practice. Newcomer Curtis Cox will contribute. Brown, Bryce Calhoun, and Will Gabbert will compete in the high jump. Calhoun, Brown, and Jared Edmundson will take part in the vertical jumps. James Moyer and Noah Ulrich are Rising Sun's top two returning pole vaulters. Ulrich eclipsed nine feet indoors, a personal best. "It's going to be interesting," coach Jim Burkhardt said. "We have a lot of strong parts. We're going to be competitive." GIRLS Rising Sun's girls team will be strong in the running events. Burkhardt has high hopes for the sprinters, led by returners Mikaela Berg and Madison Webb and newcomer Asia Hollis. Jackie Ayers and Jackie Barbon have also been impressive. "We'll see what happens," Burkhardt said. "We have a large number of girls showing potential." Many of the Tigers' 800 runners are already running times as fast as they were at the end of last season. Three runners have turned in 800 relay legs under 2:40. After running a personal best 2:40 indoors, Danielle Lee was timed in 2:37 at last week's scrimmage. Junior Teresa Reid and freshman Julia Herrmann have been under 2:40 and Emma Wheeler is running comparable times. "Our 4 x 800 relay team will be as good as any in the UCBAC," Burkhardt said. Reid, Wheeler, and Alanah Bell return in the 1600 and 3200 where they will be joined by promising freshmen Emma Cease and Sawyer Pietuszka. Ayers and Cameryn Dugger will compete in the hurdles events. Lee returns in the throwing events. Barbon has shown potential and Tessa Beblo is back after not competing last season. Kiona Brady will compete in the long jump with Brooke Ratledge the top returning triple jumper. Rising Sun is still seeking entrants for pole vault and high jump. "The field events are a big question mark," said Burkhardt. "Overall, we should be competitive with UCBAC teams in the running events. I have high faith in these girls. I think they'll have a strong season." Comments are closed.
