Success has it rewards. Sometimes those rewards present additional challenges. That's the case for the Rising Sun tennis team. The Tigers enjoyed a remarkable season last spring, going 15-0 in regular season matches.
Rising Sun won the Susquehanna Division title to earn a promotion to the significantly more difficult Chesapeake. "It's a whole new set of challenges," coach Larry Sickels said. "We'll get to see new teams and new talent and it's a new opportunity for our players to grow and experience a new level of tennis." It will also help Tiger players prepare for the postseason individual tournaments. "It will benefit the players to face a higher caliber of play," said Sickels. "We want to be competitive whether it's in the Susquehanna or in the Chesapeake. We want the kids to have fun and teach them a sport they can play for the rest of their lives." Rising Sun lost all three boys singles players to graduation. Logan Holtman, who played first doubles last season, has earned the number one singles spot. Jason Kelsch, who was not in the lineup last season, will play the second singles position. The third singles spot was up in the air as of last week. Jeremiah Herrmann is back at first doubles with new partner Max Foppiano. At mixed doubles, Brandon McMinn and Kaysie Mackie will team up for the third straight year. "They are an outstanding team," Sickels said. "They have come a long way and I'm excited to see them play in the Chesapeake Division." Amber Burrell and Tara Norona will occupy the top two girls singles slots. Number three Miranda Greenleaf saw some action at doubles last year. "She has shown she can handle singles," said Sickels. Brianna Rohrer and Anna Chidester had a big year at second doubles last year and have moved up to the top slot. Newcomers Samantha Braun and Maura Elburn will play second doubles. "It's not realistic for us to think we can repeat the 15-0 season," Sickels said. "But I think it is realistic to expect some wins. I don't think we're going to be blown out 11-0 in matches. I think we'll surprise some people." Comments are closed.
