The shorthanded Rising Sun girls basketball team downed Bohemia Manor 52-43 Saturday afternoon to capture the Green -N- Gold High School Holiday Basketball Tournament hosted by Cecil College. Playing without three players in its regular rotation – starters Paige Bradford and Abby Mack and top reserve Kaytlen Nugent – the Tigers got strong performances from the dependable Brooke Bower, usual starters Lexi Osborne (nine points) and Courtney Spangler (nine points, eight rebounds), as well as Megan Brown, Caitlin Shober (eight points), and Jess Borchardt. "It was a great effort. It was a great team effort," Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt said. "I was concerned because we were missing three of our top six players and I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to compensate but everybody stepped up. Megan Brown came up from the JV team and started both days for us and senior Caitlin Shober has really stepped up in the absence of Abby Mack. Jess Borchardt did great today without Paige Bradford so I was very pleased with that."
Rising Sun built a nine-point lead midway through the second quarter. Bohemia Manor managed to stay within striking distance but were never able to cut into the deficit. The Eagles scored to get within nine late in the third quarter before Osborne answered with a driving scoop shot in the lane to enable the Tigers to regain a double-digit cushion. Rising Sun was able to disrupt the Eagles' offense with its traps and presses and also did a good job rebounding. "It was huge for us and we had talked about that because they have some very good players on the boards," said Stoudt. "We had stressed that, going for second shots. Brooke Bower, I had talked to her before the game, about making up for the absences of other people because she distributes a lot but she scored 24 today so that was what we needed." Bower relished the challenge. "We were missing Paige and she's a big player in the game so I had to step up and bring the ball up," said Bower. "We worked through it. We played hard." Bower was named MVP of the tournament. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Osborne, Bohemia Manor's Delany Midash and Kayla Thompson, North East's :Lauren Cochran, and Havre de Grace's Addie Richardson. The Tigers topped North East 39-29 in Friday's first round. Osborne had a team-high 11 points followed by Spangler (10) and Bower (nine). Comments are closed.
