Cecil County wrestlers Silas Filliaux of Rising Sun, North East's Marshall Johnston, and the Tigers' Richie Moore each won an individual title at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference tournament which concluded Saturday afternoon at Edgewood High. Filliaux (34-3) topped Havre de Grace's Alex Lloyd, 12-4, in the championship bout.
It is the third straight conference crown for the Rising Sun junior. "It's nice," Filliaux said. "From our high school there's only three people that ever won UCBACs four times and regionals four times (Matt Jackson, Danny Cox, and Anthony Cimorosi). I'd honestly like to be one of them. It's tough because anything can happen. It's nice I can get my third and hopefully I go four and four my senior year." Filliaux has become accustomed to the big stage. "I've done a bunch of ceremonial finals before," he said. "This is, honestly, nothing new to me. I personally don't like it because it's annoying, but I've done it so many times it's second nature. I don't get shook at the moment and I just perform, whether it be my first round or the finals. I just go out there and perform, wrestle hard." Filliaux recorded a takedown 10 seconds into the match. "It's so important [to get an early lead]," said Filliaux. "He didn't want to lock up with me. He had his arm extended and I just overlapped him and shrugged him by and got him in a Merkle. That was just him being maybe a little timid, not wanting to lock up. I'm pretty well-versed in my takedowns so I just jumped on that." Filliaux dominated throughout. "You've got to break them," he said. "If you ever wrestle a good wrestler they're not just going to be open. You've got to move them, got to be aggressive, kind of get them off their game. If you just stand there stagnant and try to shoot, nothing's going to happen." Johnston (160) improved to 33-1 on the season by pinning Bel Air's Dave Abboud with 11 seconds left in the second period. "Every pin, that's the best feeling," Johnston said. "Especially doing it to get a first for my first time ever. Yeah, it feels great." Johnston came in confident because Bel Air had avoided matching up Abboud with the Indians' senior earlier in the season. "I knew they wouldn't put him up against me in the dual season when we met, so I knew he couldn't be that confident," said Johnston. "I just went in there loose because I have been wrestling longer than the kid and it wasn't that tough of a match for me in my head beforehand." With his first conference title under his belt, Johnston can now turn his attention to chasing a region crown. "I didn't even make it to regionals my first couple years of high school," said Johnston. "So now to be one of the top seeds going in there, it's very fulfilling." Rising Sun's Moore (170), a senior, was wrestling in his first postseason tournament final and made the most of it, prevailing 9-2 over Christian Wilson of Fallston. "It was all hard work," said Moore, who raised his record to 26-9. "I'm just really happy right now. It feels great." Moore stuck to his gameplan. "I just kind of pushed the pace and then I see what he did to counter it and then get the best way to score I know," said Moore. Wilson won the regular season matchup between the two. Moore led before being caught for a pin. "For every match, I'm always a little nervous," Moore said. "But this match I was just preparing in my head, walking through what I was going to do and I got it done." North East's Gabe Nuzzo (106) and Perryville's Jarrett Hunter (145) also made the finals. Nuzzo was forced to injury default to Bel Air's Trevor Lorin. Nuzzo is expected to be able to compete in the region tournament. Hunter lost 9-3 to Jordon Myers of Patterson Mill. The county's third place finishers: Colby Miller of Rising Sun (113), Tyler Kelley of Bohemia Manor (120), Colin Day of North East (126), Hunter Zacerous of Perryville (138), Kendall Fleming of North East (145), Khaleil Mitchell of Perryville (152), Tyler Sczbelek of Bohemia Manor (170), Taylor Cimorosi of Rising Sun (195), and Steve Thomas of Perryville (285). Bel Air (255.5) breezed to its fifth straight conference title followed by Patterson Mill (159), C. Milton Wright (155), Perryville (129.5), Rising Sun (119), and Bohemia Manor (102). North East (97) was ninth with Elkton (6) 15th. The region tournament will be held this weekend in Snow Hill. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament.
