It was the most important assist the Rising Sun JV boys basketball team will have all season. The Tigers squad spent several hours Sunday evening, February 8, helping to serve a meal at The Paris Foundation. Rising Sun JV coach Greg Alexander suggested his team take part. It was not mandatory, but almost the entire team attended – Cameron Atland, Ryan Bauer, Zack Chadwick, Ethan Greene, Nate McCullough, Austin Newby, Chris Orr, Andrew Parker, William Ristine, and Brendan Shivery. Two were ill and another had a previous engagement. He became aware of The Paris Foundation through Eric Farrington, assistant JV coach and the father of Rising Sun varsity player Will Farrington. The Farringtons' church, Faith Baptist, helps The Paris Foundation. Eric and Will joined the JV team for the meal.
"There's more to coaching than sports for me," Alexander said. "It's about life lessons and the kids giving back to the community. We are all blessed. Our kids are all blessed. We want the kids to see, in some small way, you can help people." Rising Sun's players found the experience rewarding. "I felt really good to help the less fortunate and thought it was a good thing to help society," Cameron Atland said. Said Ryan Bauer: "It felt good to put our community in a positive light." "It felt good putting a smile on someone's face," said Chris Orr. The Tigers impressed meal coordinator Chris Malizzi. "Those young men were the best behaved group of teen boys I have encountered," she said. Bob and Tracy Imperatrice started The Paris Foundation about three years ago. The organization moved to its South Bridge Street, Elkton, location two years ago. "Anytime we get new volunteers here it's awesome, specifically young volunteers," said Bob Imperatrice. "It gives kids a chance to see what's going on in the real world." With assistance from local churches and community groups, The Paris Foundation serves two meals a day on Sundays and an evening meal the other six days of the week The Paris Foundation is named in memory of the late Leslie Carl Paris, who ministered to the homeless and low income community in Elkton.
