Havre de Grace upended Rising Sun 7-5 in a Little League Maryland District 5 Junior Division softball first round game Monday in Elkton. With the score tied 3-3, Havre de Grace took the lead for good with two unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Rising Sun responded with a run in the top of the sixth but left the bases loaded. Leadoff hitter Taylor Mantyk was robbed by Havre de Grace shortstop Luann Blake, who made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left field. Claire Curran drew a walk to get things starter. Malorie Garbriel reached on an error to put runners on the corners and then stole second. With two outs, Rising Sun scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
Havre de Grace added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 7-4. Rising Sun threatened in the seventh. Alyssa Paulette ripped a single through the hole to start the inning. After an out, Mantyk drew a walk. With runners on first and third, the rally was short-circuited when Rising Sun had a runner thrown out at second trying to steal. Paulette scored on the play to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Rising Sun was not in a position to trade a run for an out. Courtney England was hit by a pitch but Havre de Grace pitcher Faith Johnson retired the next batter to end the game. Rising Sun led 3-1 through three innings. Paulette had an RBi single to plate Ingrid Miller in the top of the first. Havre de Grace tied it on a Blake RBI double in the bottom half. Rising Sun tallied twice in the third. Hailey Delano walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Madison Cooper groundout. Katie Main knocked in another run when her ground ball to the shortstop got through. Havre de Grace argued the baserunner interfered with the shortstop's ability to make the play but did not get the call. Havre de Grace tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth. Miller pitched well for Rising Sun and deserved a better fate. Comments are closed.
