The Rising Sun girls basketball team saved their best performance of the season so far for their most significant game. The Tigers took over sole possession of first place in the Susquehanna Division with a wire-to-wire 49-38 win over visiting Harford Tech Thursday night. All five starters scored at least seven points. Brooke Bower led the way with 16 points and also added eight rebounds. Lexi Osborne collected 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Abby Mack contributed eight points and 10 boards. Courtney Spangler supplied eight points and Paige Bradford chipped in seven points and three steals. "That was the best we've played all year," Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt said. "It was the most balanced. We're always balanced. People want to focus in on Brooke a lot but they really can't do that because all the players on the floor have the ability to score. That was evident [Thursday night]. But I was proud of the composure that they kept. [Harford Tech was] a very athletic team. We were able to fight off their surges. I was really proud. This was a fantastic win for us."
The Tigers tallied the game's first seven points and never led by less than three the rest of the way. Ahead 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 13-10 with six minutes left in the half, Rising Sun scored eight straight. Harford Tech didn't get closer than seven after that. Stoudt was proud of the way her team played aggressive ball throughout. "We had talked about we'd like to win the division," said Stoudt. "We knew that we were tied with them for first place so we knew it was going to take that type of game to win. Before the game we talked about having no regrets. Just play your heart out, and then at the end of the game, win or lose, just have no regrets. I think they felt comfortable and calm and that worked for us." Rising Sun extended its lead to 34-18 midway through the third quarter. Tech hurt its cause with two technical fouls in the fourth quarter but still managed to narrow the gap to eight with 4:24 left in the game. After a jumper by Spangler, the Cobras countered with three straight to make it a seven-point game before Spangler hit two free throws to help put the game away. "I knew they were a really good team and it was going to be a good game," Bower said. "We just all brought our A game, try to do our best to be division champs." Thursday's win was a big step in that direction. "It meant a lot," said Bower. "We're definitely not going to stop playing hard. It fells good to know we're in the first place spot." Harford Tech hosts the Tigers on February 19 in the regular season finale. Rising Sun recorded a 44-27 victory over host Perryville Tuesday. The Tigers broke the game open in the second half after leading just 12-10 at halftime. Bower had 11 points and five steals. Osborne added nine points. Bradford and Alexa Webber each provided eight.
