At halftime of its final regular season home game, the Rising Sun boys soccer program honored members of its 2005 state finalist squad. Then the 2015 Tigers went out and played like the team from 10 years ago. Rising Sun snapped a 1-1 halftime tie with three unanswered goals on the way to a 4-1 Senior Night triumph over Perryville Friday night. Seniors accounted for all four Tiger goals. Brandon Denk tallied twice in a 38-second span early in the second half to put the hosts ahead 3-1. Just 1:43 into the second stanza, Denk knocked in a rebound off the bottom part of the crossbar. Noah Mullins set up the goal by moving down the right side and putting a hard, low shot on goal. "That was basically all Noah," Denk said. "He just took it up the wing and he just made a really great shot and I just followed up and scored the goal. It was all him on that play." Kane Watson, recorded an assist on Denk's second score. "It was just a really good cross in from Kane from the outside corner and I just one-tapped it right in," said Denk. Brad Alexander added an insurance goal off a Logan Holtman assist with 11 minutes left. After a back-and-forth first half, it was all Rising Sun in the final 40 minutes. "It was Senior Night," said Holtman. "We wanted to make sure we finished off our last home game strong. Just settle down and start playing the way we know how to play." While the 2005 team was being announced to the crowd, the 2015 Tigers were regrouping. "At halftime coach (Ken Ulrich) was a little upset because we didn't have a lot of momentum," said Denk. "We tried to get ourselves together and had a really good pep talk and motivated each other. I fell like that's what got us the win." Both teams had several good chances in the first half. The Tigers' Jeremiah Herrmann hit a shot off the crossbar. Rising Sun defender Collin Rich slid to stop a Perryville shot from crossing the goal line. Watson put Rising Sun ahead with a pretty volley after Kai Brewer headed the ball to the center of the box. The Panthers' Nick Ports answered with 27:41 left in the opening half. No Tiger players have lost to a county opponent. Perryville defeated Rising Sun in 2012, but none of the current Rising Sun players were on varsity. Rising Sun's seniors and their families were honored prior to the game. The 10 Tiger seniors: Denk, Watson, Holtman, Alexander, Mullins, Bryce Calhoun, Herrmann, Wyatt Kennedy, Kai Brewer, and Bryan Butler. Denk transferred to Rising Sun from Red Lion Christian prior to his senior season. "It was different coming in, a bunch of new guys and everything," Denk said. "Once I got to know them it was really nice and I feel like a bonded with a bunch of the guys. It was a good experience winning here and I appreciate it."
