Harford Tech put a damper on Senior Night and essentially clinched the Susquehanna Division title outright by defeating the Rising Sun boys lacrosse team 10-8 Wednesday night. "I'm disappointed," Rising Sun coach Chris King said. "My hats off to [Harford Tech]. They got the ground balls. Faceoffs, coming in we knew was going to be a challenge for us and they got every single one. So, that limits our possessions. The game was tight, a lot of penalties on both sides, which took us out of our rhythm. Our man up [offense] was really disappointing. That was probably my biggest disappointment in our guys. We did not get anything off the man up. That set us back a lot. Tough one to take."
Trailing 8-6 early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers had a golden opportunity to get back into the game. Rising Sun had a two-man advantage, but called for two penalties in a nine-second span. "I wish I had some kind of words to describe it," said King. "We had the opportunities right there so there was no one to blame but ourselves. We had the opportunities but it was our mistakes. It was our mistakes…I can't even tell you what happened. I said this all year long, we don't play well when we're tight. I didn't think we were tight. I think the result on the field indicated that we were a little bit tight. Sometimes when we're tight, that's when we're dropping balls, and swing checks and [the officials] are calling a tight game. When we see that, we've got to adjust to that. We can't play into that. The refs were on [Harford Tech], calling penalties on them. We had it right where we wanted it and we just gave it right back to them. It's unfortunate." Tech tacked on two more goals to take a 10-6 lead with 4:17 remaining. Ethan Greene and Connor Burkhardt scored for Rising Sun, but Burkhardt's goal came with only 32 seconds left. Burkhardt, one of 12 Tiger seniors honored at halftime, finished with a team-high three goals and added an assist. Austin Philistine tallied twice. Wyatt Griffith and Wyatt Kennedy each contributed a goal. Brad Alexander handed out two assists and Phil Hurm had an assist. Kennedy, a long stick midfielder, scored 21 seconds into the game to put Rising Sun in front. Tech led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter before Burkhardt scored the lone goal of the second quarter to tie the game heading into halftime. Philistine gave Rising Sun a 5-4 edge a little less than three minutes into the third quarter but Tech tallied three straight goals to take command. It was the first division loss of the year for Rising Sun (9-2 overall). Harford Tech can wrap up outright title with a win over an inferior Aberdeen squad on May 4. Comments are closed.
