As the late ESPN broadcaster Stuart Scott used to say, "You better recognize". Rising Sun boys basketball coach Don Passenant said his team failed to do that against Elkton's pressure defense Friday night. The Elks stormed out to a 22-3 lead and forced 15 first quarter turnovers en route to a 71-54 triumph over the visiting Tigers.
"I had to call two timeouts," Rising Sun coach Don Passenant said. "The third timeout was called because we got double-teamed. The problem was they weren't reading [the Elkton press} right. They know what to do. They were playing like it was a fullcourt press and they were actually doing a three-quarters [court] press. Once they figured it out. Once it got in their heads, they'd do the right thing. They did it in the second half. But in the first half they didn't do it and I was running out of timeouts. We need to be better prepared for that. That was the best press we've gone up against, too." Rising Sun, trying for a second straight win in Elkton, trailed by as many as 23 points in the second quarter before battling back late. The Tigers whittled the deficit down to 53-45 and had the ball with 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Rising Sun missed a jumper and a putback and Elkton blocked two shots. A basket by the Elks' Royce Ruffin and a free throw by Owen Null nudged lead back up to 11. The Tigers' Kevin Alkinburg scored with 2:31 to go to trim the margin to 60-52, but the Elks answered with eight straight. Rising Sun has made a habit of falling behind early before bouncing back to make things interesting. "That's what we did against North Harford, too," Passenant said. "We start off slow in the beginning or we make mistakes…Once they calmed down and broke the press things really started to go well for them and they realize it. They have a lot of desire. They need more experience. I told the guys in the locker room, we're going around a second time and we should be able to show something different." Null led Elkton with 18 points. Kyair Cook contributed 16 and Ruffin recorded 15. Alkinburg paced Rising Sun with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Will Farrington added nine points and seven rebounds. Noah Juergens contributed 12 points and Jesse Shields supplied 10. The Tigers committed 30 turnovers for the game, but only six in the second half. Rising Sun lost 54-51 in overtime to North Harford Tuesday. The Tigers trailed by 15 at halftime and by 11 in the fourth quarter before rallying. Farrington had a team-high 12 points followed by Alkinburg (11) and Brennan Martz (10). Comments are closed.
