Pitcher Emily Phillips says the Perryville softball team plays every game like its record is 0-0. If that's the case then you could say the Panthers have put together 14 one-game winning streaks. Perryville remained perfect on the season with a 6-2 triumph over visiting Rising Sun Wednesday. The Panthers took the lead in the home half of the second. Mara Little tripled over the head of the center fielder and scored on a wild pitch.
In the third, Lydia Hill delivered an RBI single and another run scored on an error. Perryville added a run on an error in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Meekins made it 5-0. Nicole DiGiambattists delivered an RBI single in the sixth. Rising Sun scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh. Maddie Foard drilled an RBI double to left-center and eventually scored on a ground out off the bat of Kaylie Linman. It was a solid performance by the Tigers, who lost starting catcher Emily Consiglio to an injury in the second inning. Ally Bradford moved behind the plate from center field and performed admirably. "You can't predict an injury in the second inning," Rising Sun coach Rusty Moore said. "We really buckled down, moved some girls around. I was very pleased with the way we played. We held one of the highest scoring teams, if not the highest scoring team, to six runs. And a couple of those we may have helped with, nothing taken away from them. I was really proud of our girls." Phillips says the Panthers have been able to win their first 14 games because of their approach. "We try not to think about it too much because we don't want our heads to get [too big]," Phillips said. "We play every game one game at a time like we're 0-0. We play every game like it's tied 1-1. We play at full intensity every inning of every game." Perryville plays at Bel Air Friday. Senior Night vs. Elkton on May 2, followed by a game at North East on Wednesday night, May 4. The regular season finale is Friday, May 6, vs. Edgewood. The Panthers are four wins away from an undefeated regular season. "Everyone's excited about it," Perryville coach Dave Ruark said. "We just want to keep doing the things we can control. We don't want to lose, but is there a huge emphasis on it? Probably more than there should be. I don't like losing ever and it's been such a good run. The biggest thing is that we gain momentum and work on ways we can get better for the playoffs." Comments are closed.
