Defense ruled the night as the Perryville girls basketball team downed host North East 28-20 Thursday night. The Panthers jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and the Indians never got closer than six the rest of the way. Perryville led 17-10 at halftime and held at least a seven-point cushion throughout the second half. Panthers coach Mike Blizzard said he was pleased with the way his team performed on defense.
"We rebounded a lot better, especially blocking out,"Blizzard said. "Defensively, our tallest player is 5-10, we have to make people beat us from outside." North East was within 24-17 with 4:35 remaining before baskets by Jill Miller and Lydia Hill put the game out of reach. Jules Jones paced Perryville with six points. Jaleea Woods scored all five of her points from the foul line and added five steals. Hill collected four points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Sarah Chandler chipped in four points. Blizzard says the Panthers' offense is still a work in progress. "We have to value possession," the coach said. "We think any shot is a good shot right now. Our shot selection needs to get better. And we need to work the ball inside and play inside-out. Offensively, we can do some things inside but we get better looks at the basket if we work from inside-out." Perryville lost 53-27 to host Bohemia Manor Monday, January 12. Teri Wennesten led the Panthers with 13 points. Comments are closed.
