by Freddy Wagner Special to The Herald Perryville girls basketball coach Amanda Wolfe had one word as to how her team prevailed late over county rival Rising Sun Monday, 47-45, Monday, February 12 - “intensity”. And indeed, intensity was the name of the game. Perryville already had suffered a disadvantage even before the game started - they only had six total players suit up, which left only one player on the bench at all times. “We had girls out of position [the whole game],” said Wolfe. The first quarter saw back and forth buckets by both the Panthers and Tigers, with an occasional mid-range jump shot falling for both teams and layups being the obvious forefront of their gameplans. After a Perryville layup and-one, the Panthers ended the first with a slight 13-12 lead.
The second quarter was more of the same. Both teams found success in feeding their bigs inside, and fouls were called generously, leading to many free throw attempts. Both teams traded leads but Perryville secured a 23-20 advantage heading into halftime. The third quarter started with a brief spurt by the Tigers, who ended up scoring nine straight points and gained a 29-27 lead. Perryville forward Bea Muscella stopped the bleeding with a baseline jumpshot, and the rest of the quarter was a back and forth affair. The Tigers found themselves trailing 36-32 with only eight minutes of action remaining. After five minutes of slow paced, defensive play to begin the fourth, the Tigers were still down by four points. Rising Sun called a timeout and then sank a critical three point shot with 1:59 left, bringing the score to 42-41. Following a mid-range shot by Perryville, the Tigers’ Ally Bradford scored on an and-one layup, then sank two more free throws to regain a mere 45-44 lead. With under a minute left in regulation, Perryville's Brianna Yadlosky converted on key free throws for the go-ahead points. Yadlosky tallied up 19 of her team’s 47 points. She took advantage of free throw shots and also converted all game with strong post play. Wolfe commended the Tigers and cherished the victory for her young team. “It was a fun game to play”.
