The Perryville boys basketball team withstood a furious Elkton rally and hung on for a 74-71 triumph over the visiting Elks Friday night. The Panthers led by 23 points with 3:30 left in the third quarter before Elkton came roaring back. With 4:14 remaining in the fourth quarter the Elks had whittled the deficit down to 12. Perryville seemed to have things under control after a TyRell Hollingsworth basket upped the lead to 68-59 with 1:45 to go. But Elkton wasn't done yet. Kyair Cook connected on a three-pointer to make it 70-68. After another Hollingsworth bucket and missed free throw, Cook buried another three to trim the deficit to 72-71 with 10.3 seconds left.
Hollingsworth was fouled and made one of two free throws before Elkton's long inbounds pass was intercepted by Tony Smith with 4.2 seconds remaining. Smith made his first free throw and missed the second but Hollingsworth grabbed the rebound to ice it. "We got a big lead and it's always tough to maintain that," Perryville coach Charles Givens Sr. said. "The kids think they can do whatever and certainly we didn't play the defense that we played earlier. We had a lot of one-on-ones. Guys who had the ball were supposed to slow it down and they didn't do that. Then we had some substitutions and they had some easy shots under [the basket]. Then [Elkton] went down and scored. It was a combination of things but we were able to pull it out at the end." The Panthers were coming off a 52-51 loss at Havre de Grace the night before. "At Havre de Grace [Thursday night] we had three chances to go ahead and it didn't happen," said Givens. "TyRell missed eight foul shots. He missed the two tonight, but he came back and made some crucial foul shots in the game. So we did what we had to do to win." Elijah Johnson was held scoreless in the Havre de Grace game but came out fast Friday, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter as Perryville built a 19-8 edge. The Panthers were ahead 23-13 at the end of the first quarter and 36-26 at halftime. A three-pointer by Smith and putback by Tyleke Johnson extended Perryville's lead to 53-30 before the Elks mounted a charge. Hollingsworth had a team-high 21 points. Smith added 15 and Tyleke Johnson contributed 14. Comments are closed.
