After a slow start to the season and only winning two games before the Green-N-Gold tournament. North East head coach Chris Hadjis said it felt like Christmas all over again, when his team won. North East battled Tome in the tournament at Cecil College on December 27. North East topped Tome with a score of 36-28. He credited the Indians' success to the fact that they are playing as a team and many of their injured players are back. "I think that they are starting to gel. We have a lot of young kids who are starting to play and gel. We have a couple of players back from injury," said Hadjis. The Indians top scorers were Janiya Bibbons with nine points and Kaitlyn Stewart with eight points. The Indians ability to move the ball quickly, make accurate shots, and play strong defense contributed to the team's win. "Moving the ball, team placement, looking for the good shot and they played great defense. We gave up 28 points and that's incredible" said Hadjis. Tome was unable to make some of the key shots needed to catch up to North East's lead. "They moved ball and played the press well. The only issue that the opponent had a couple of shots that probably did not fall that usually fall for them. They are a well coached team and a well disciplined team. I think they just maybe had off day and we were able to catch them on that," he said. Hadjis is hopeful his team will start off the new year right after having one of their key players, Anna Gamble, back from injury. "Gamble is back and she is starting to shake the rust off a little bit. So we should be good to go starting January when we are getting toward divisional games," he said. The team needs to work on reducing the amount of turnovers and working on team member placement in defense, the coach said. Comments are closed.
