by Freddy Wagner Special to The Herald Perryville’s boys basketball team lost to visiting North East 58-39 on Tuesday, January 23, with a score of 58-39. The game was tied 4-4 before North East decisively pulled away at the end the first quarter, highlighted by an 11-0 run using fast-paced, efficient basketball which led to open looks. North East head coach Seth Grimes chalked up his team’s strong first quarter performance to heightened concentration and readiness. “I think we came out with some energy," he said. "From the start, we just had a better focus and a better mentality to come out, and we had a better aggression than [Perryville].”
The Panthers followed up on a developing trend to fall behind early in games and could not make up for the deficit. Perryville finally quenched their scoring drought with a TyeSean Stephenson layup 5:44 into the second quarter. They eventually went on a run of their own, quickly putting up 13 points to bring the score to 30-17 by halftime. The Panthers eventually clawed back into contention, bringing the seemingly insurmountable 16-point lead to only six by the end of the third quarter, 38-32. Perryville was fueled by strong inside play from Stephenson and senior Caleb Robinson. In a relatively low scoring fourth quarter, the Indians effectively put the nail in the coffin with four consecutive scores that ended Perryville’s hopes for a late comeback. North East sliced through their opponent’s defense in the waning minutes with transition layups and effective passing. Grimes emphasized his team’s fast paced style of play as the reason his team ultimately came out with a win. “We just wanted to pick up the tempo," he said. "We wanted to get out in the open floor as much as we could, and once we are in transition, that’s the best chemistry we have.” Comments are closed.
