Perryville field hockey coach Janet Candy says playing Fallston is like a 12-round fight. In last Wednesday's 1A north region final, the Panthers narrowly avoided an early round knockout, fought back furiously in the latter stages, but ultimately were unable to land enough blows. The 14-time state champion Cougars ended Perryville's season with a 2-0 triumph. Fallston thoroughly dominated the first half and tallied twice in the first 15 minutes. Liz Hebert scored 11:24 into the game and Jane Bradley scored 3:33 later to give the hosts a 2-0 edge.
"We can't go down without a fight," Candy said she told her team at halftime. "We have to fight to the very end. We deserve to be here. We've beaten them before (a 1-0 win regular season victory). It's within our potential to win." She wasn't surprised the Panthers responded with an outstanding second half. "They want it," Candy said. "They're a second half team and they're very aggressive. They don't like to give up and walked all over. We knew it was going to be a 12-round fight and we had to go to the very end." Perryville applied pressure but could not dent the scoreboard. "We've been a second half team all season," Candy said. "They just didn't want to do down without a fight. We felt we were a team that definitely had the potential to score twice in the second half and make a comeback. And we always play Fallston to the last minute. So I thought they just came out very hungry in the second half. They had a great second half I thought. A great second half." Candy believes the season is something Perryville can build on next year. "I thought it was great," she said. "I thought we did a great job. I think that we played very well every game. We played hard. We came out to win. We came out to play. And I think it's a cool thing for next year only losing two seniors (standout center midfielder Merve Akbay and defender Machel Maxam). I think it will definitely carry the momentum into next year with these girls having more playoff experience and going farther into the playoffs." Comments are closed.
